Floyd Mayweather Jr. seems to have found Gervonta Davis’ replacement in his boxing promotion company, after ‘Tank’ left Mayweather Promotions in 2022.
Essentialy Sports recalls that, in 2015, ‘Money’ bet on a young and ambitious boxer named Gervonta Davis, who at the time had less than 10 fights under his belt.
From there, the Baltimore native’s career took off, with Mayweather being a key factor in that rise. However, in 2022, before his fight against Rolando Romero, ‘Tank’ cut his relationship with the former boxer’s company, and not in the best way, since then they have exchanged ‘blows’ outside the ring.
Jursly Vargas, the successor to Tank Davis?
Mayweather Promotions’ new lightweight jewel is Jursly Vargas, a 20-year-old who has been making waves.
“The Gorilla” knocked out Yanko Naydenov in the first round in his professional debut in 2022, in a fight held in Amsterdam; a month later he signed with Mayweather Promotions.
Yesterday, on the card headlined by Sebastian Fundora and Chordale Booker, Vargas scored a victory over Uhlices Avelino-Reyes, 33, once again by KO in the fourth round.
This situation has Mayweather very happy, as he seems to have found his next boxing star, and through his Instagram stories, ‘Money’ asked to follow and support his client.

Kevin Garcia, a FightHype reporter, has dubbed Jursly Vagas “Tank Clone”. Essentially Sports indicates that they both resemble each other in height, hairstyle and speed, although the Dominican is heavier. However, beyond the physical resemblance, the 20-year-old still has a long way to go before he can be compared to the Baltimore southpaw.
Jursly Vargas has very little in professional boxing, he has five wins, four by KO. Initially, the young man born in Curacao and raised partly in Rotterdam, Netherlands, started in combat sports as a kickboxer and at the age of 16 he turned to boxing.
After signing with Mayweather Promotions, “The Gorilla” went to Las Vegas to train at the former champion’s gym, which gave him a whole new experience, honing his skills against elite sparring partners and attentive trainers, adds Essentially Sports.
The immediate goal after achieving five victories is to fight for a world title before the age of 21.
In addition to the professional relationship, Vargas considers Mayweather a mentor whom he asks for advice.
“We started traveling a lot together. Right now, I can call him and he answers,” he said respectfully. “He always tells me what to do and what good decisions to make. He’s a mentor, he’s always there. He changed my life and I’m grateful to him for everything,” Vargas told Convo Flows some time ago.
