Fever’s Sophie Cunningham details tough recovery after MCL tear

Sophie Cunningham might not be on the floor for the Indiana Fever during their playoff push, but she’s still finding ways to stay involved – and honest – about her road to recovery.

Over the weekend, the 29-year-old guard gave fans a look at her latest rehab session via Instagram, posting a video of herself undergoing electroacupuncture therapy. Her caption summed it up in one word: “brutal.”

Electroacupuncture, while not typically painful, is designed to help reduce inflammation and manage pain through electrical stimulation of acupuncture points. Her choice of words suggests frustration more than physical discomfort – a likely response to the grind of repeated treatment while watching her team compete without her.

Cunningham staying present with team despite season-ending surgery

Cunningham suffered a torn MCL in her right knee on August 17 following a collision with Bria Hartley. The injury required surgery and brought her promising first season with the Fever to an abrupt halt.

Despite being sidelined, she hasn’t disappeared from the team. Cunningham has remained a vocal and visible presence on the bench throughout Indiana’s playoff journey.

She’s also used her social media platforms to give followers a transparent look into her recovery process, regularly posting rehab milestones and behind-the-scenes updates.

Before the injury, Cunningham was averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists across 30 games – a solid contribution in her debut year after being traded from the Phoenix Mercury back in January.

While she won’t return to action this season, her focus now shifts to healing and returning stronger next year – all while cheering on a Fever squad that continues to fight deep into the postseason.
