Julio Cesar Chavez Jr‘s extradition to Mexico has been much talked about as the Mexican authorities are now in charge of the investigation against the boxer, who is accused of having links to drug trafficking. In fact, the authorities said they fear for the safety of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

The director of the maximum security prison, Centro Federal de Readaptacion Social (Cefereso) 11, where Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is being held, sent a letter to the Control Judge, Enrique Hernandez Miranda, to request that the boxer’s next hearing be by video call, as they fear that he may be the object of an attack

According to information consulted by Marca, in the Sonora area where Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is being held, there are high levels of violence due to the presence of organized crime, particularly the Sinaloa Cartel, so there is a risk that the boxer could be attacked during his transfer to court

Judge asks not to keep Chavez Jr incommunicado

Julio Cesar Chavez filed an injunction with the authorities in Hermosillo, Sonora, to avoid being held incommunicado while in prison. The request was approved by the Eleventh District Judge of the State of Sonora, Ana Maria Nava Ortega, so it was ordered not to have the Mexican boxer without communication.

This was achieved because the legal defense of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr argued the “illegal deprivation of liberty and incommunication”, so they requested the authorities to take immediate action in favor of their client. It should be noted that the Mexican boxer remains in justified preventive detention while his legal situation is resolved

It should be remembered that Julio Cesar Chavez was arrested in California, United States at the beginning of July. However, he already had an arrest warrant in Mexico, so the US authorities agreed to extradite the boxer to face Mexican justice

Why was Julio Cesar Chavez Jr arrested?

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was arrested on July 2 in the United States after the boxer lost a fight in Anaheim against Jake Paul. The US authorities accused him of having links with drug trafficking, specifically with the Sinaloa Cartel.

In addition, they indicated that he did not have documents to be legally in the United States

According to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), Chavez Jr. had an arrest warrant in Mexico since 2023 for organized crime and arms trafficking.
