Fears cleared for Mahomes over WR routes, Xavier Worthy now poised for a starring role with the Chiefs

Earlier this season, wide receiver Rashee Rice suffered a serious knee injury in Week 4, abruptly ending a campaign that had been turning heads. In just his second year, Rice had impressed both teammates and coaches with standout performances that earned him recognition as one of the league’s breakout players at his position.

His unfortunate absence opened the door for rookie Xavier Worthy to step in and fill a massive void-and not only did Worthy rise to the challenge, he far exceeded expectations.

Worthy quickly became a key piece in the Chiefs’ offensive scheme. Game after game, he earned the trust of his coaches and quarterback, delivering impactful plays that made a difference on the field.

Reflecting on this shift, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy stated:

Confidence and the game is slowing down for him… It reminds me so much of Rashee [Rice] last year.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, special teams coordinator Dave Toub also shared thoughts on Worthy’s potential:

He ended up being the number one [receiver] for us last year, so we couldn’t afford to have him back there. I say he’s the best punt returner nobody knows about right now in the league, and that’s Worthy, so hopefully we get him back there, too.

This is precisely why success often comes to those who are prepared for it. Worthy made the most of his opportunity following Rice’s injury, performing so well that the team is now considering using him in an expanded role-as a punt returner.

That possibility has generated excitement in Kansas City. When asked about it, Worthy said:

Oh man, I don’t know. Stay tuned. Stay tuned. I can’t drop that yet.

And regarding his approach:

I think every time I touch the ball, I’m liable to score, so if I have that chance to be on punt return and change the game for my team, I’m going to do it.

He admitted it could make him a dangerous weapon.

Returning punts wouldn’t be new territory for Xavier

During his collegiate career at Texas, Worthy recorded 371 yards as a punt returner, including one return for a touchdown. His experience and confidence in this role make him a valuable asset for special teams.

Last season, the Chiefs relied on Mecole Hardman as their primary returner. He handled 20 punt returns before leaving the team for the Green Bay Packers ahead of the new season.

The current returner options on the Chiefs’ roster include Nikko Remigio and Brashard Smith, but given Toub’s high praise for Worthy, it’s likely he’ll see frequent action in that role as well.

For now, Worthy remains focused on performing at his best, contributing in multiple positions, and proving that he can be a consistent difference-maker wherever the team needs him.
