Fans demand CBS fire Tony Romo after Thanksgiving commentary backlash

Tony Romo, once a beloved voice in NFL broadcasting, has recently faced growing criticism from fans, with calls for his removal from CBS broadcasts intensifying.

Since joining the network in 2017, the former Cowboys quarterback earned praise for his deep understanding of the game, his ability to break down plays, and his knack for predicting offensive schemes before the snap.

However, the perception of Romo has shifted as the league and its offenses evolve.

In recent weeks, many viewers argue that Romo struggles to anticipate plays the way he once did. NFL offenses have become more complex, and schemes that once allowed him to predict outcomes with near-uncanny accuracy now seem to leave him behind.

His commentary has been scrutinized for favoring Patrick Mahomes, although Romo himself appeared visibly frustrated with the quarterback’s performance against the Colts on Sunday.

The Chiefs–Cowboys Thanksgiving game drew particular attention, with Romo‘s analysis sparking complaints across social media.

Fan Backlash and Calls for CBS to Act

Social media reactions indicate that Romo‘s popularity may be waning. Some fans have gone so far as to urge CBS to fire him, though there is no indication the network plans to make any changes.

“I’m thankful that most NFL games do NOT feature Tony Romo on commentary,” Sam Monson of The 33rd Team tweeted, reflecting a sentiment shared by a growing number of viewers.

Criticism has also been fueled by past gaffes, including a controversial moment earlier this season when Romo mistakenly offered condolences to the family of an NFL coach who is very much alive.

Despite the backlash, Romo remains a key figure in CBS’s NFL broadcast lineup. He is scheduled to call the Bills–Raiders game on Sunday, a fixture likely to generate similar reactions given his current scrutiny.

Some observers suggest that Romo‘s struggles stem not from a lack of knowledge but from the evolving complexity of NFL offenses, which challenge even the most seasoned analysts.

Once praised for his predictive insights and deep football IQ, Romo now faces the challenge of adapting his commentary style to the modern NFL.

As offenses continue to innovate and fans grow increasingly vocal about broadcast coverage, his ability to maintain credibility and relevance may determine whether his place in the booth remains secure or becomes a source of controversy for CBS.
