The family of the college football player who fell from a height of more than 20 feet from the stands during a Chicago Cubs game in Pittsburgh has provided an update on his condition.

The baseball fan who was seriously injured after a 21-foot fall at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park has been identified as Kavan Markwood.

Markwood fell from the stands onto the field during the seventh inning of the Pirates vs Cubs game last Wednesday night, authorities said.

His family is very grateful

The Pittsburgh Public Safety Department said the incident is being treated as accidental.

On Saturday, his family spoke out for the first time to thank the public and offer an update on his condition.

“Although Kav’s journey is far from over, we have hope. Your prayers and positive thoughts are needed now more than ever.” – Taryn Markwood, Kavan’s sister

“I’m incredibly grateful to share that Kav is making remarkable progress: he was extubated this morning, was able to say my name and even squeezed my hand,” his sister Taryn Markwood said. These small victories are monumental for us.

Markwood attended Walsh University in Ohio

After studying at Walsh, Markwood transferred to Wheeling University in West Virginia, where he was part of the football team in 2023.

Amy Thompson, who was sitting next to Markwood at the game, told Pittsburgh ABC affiliate WTAE:

When he jumped out of his seat to celebrate, it looked like he had his hands on the fence in front of us, something I had also done several times during the match

“I think the momentum with which he jumped out of his seat and the way he grabbed the railing made me feel as if he had catapulted himself over it.”

The family’s full statement

“Now that I can finally breathe more easily, I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has given me unconditional support during this unimaginable time.

“To the first responders who acted quickly and skillfully: thank you for rushing to my brother Kav’s side, stabilizing him and ensuring he received the urgent medical attention he so desperately needed. Your bravery and professionalism made all the difference.

“To the players, coaches, staff and everyone who knelt to pray at that tragic moment for the Pirates and Cubs: your compassion did not go unnoticed. It brought a sense of unity and hope in the midst of chaos.

To the incredible team at Allegheny General Hospital: nurses, doctors, emergency medical services staff, case managers, certified nursing assistants (CNAs), the critical care team, technicians, the emergency department team and so many others: thank you for your tireless effort, expertise and care. If I have omitted anyone, I want you to know that your contribution is greatly appreciated.

“To everyone who has generously contributed to the GoFundMe campaign set up for Kav, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your kindness and generosity mean more than words can express.“To everyone who has prayed, sent good wishes and offered support, you have helped us through some of our most difficult times. I am incredibly grateful to share that Kav is making remarkable progress: he was extubated this morning, was able to say my name and even squeezed my hand. These little victories are monumental for us.“Although Kav’s journey is far from over, we have hope. Your continued prayers and positive thoughts are needed and appreciated more than ever.”“The overwhelming support from across the country has been truly humbling. From our family to yours, thank you. We appreciate every prayer, every word of encouragement and every act of kindness. We are not alone, and for that, we are eternally grateful,” the statement concluded.
