Ezekiel Elliott is among the latest NFL rumors ahead of the 2025 season, as the former Dallas Cowboys star could hang up his spikes.

Rumors about the former Cowboys running back have been posted on social media on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Why might Ezekiel Elliott retire?

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott could be contemplating retirement after nine seasons in the NFL, as he has so far received no interest in free agency ahead of the 2025 NFL season, although neither the player nor his agent have reported this.

Despite the availability of Ezekiel Elliott in free agency, there has been no public indication of interest from other teams as training camps approach. Elliott‘s name appears among the best unsigned running backs, but teams have mostly moved in other directions for backfield depth.

Ezekiel Elliott could retire after nine NFL seasons

With no interest reported in free agency so far, former Dallas Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott could retire after nine seasons in the NFL. Last year, in an interview, Ezekiel Elliott acknowledged the possibility that his playing days might be coming to an end, saying:

“Every play, every year, another year that I have is a blessing. I don’t know how many more of these I’m going to have. And just take advantage of being here and live in the moment.”

One of the most outstanding runners in Cowboys history

If Ezekiel Elliott does retire, he will leave the game as one of the most outstanding running backs in Cowboys history, ranking among the franchise’s all-time leaders in rushing yards and touchdowns. His durability and powerful running style helped define the Cowboys’ offense for much of the past decade.

For now, Elliott’s future remains uncertain as he considers his options with training camps set to open and no offers on the table.

Ezekiel Elliott’s problems after the Cowboys

Ezekiel Elliott, 29, was released by the Cowboys after the 2024 season, marking the end of his second stint with the franchise that drafted him fourth overall in 2016

The decision followed a year in which Ezekiel Elliott had a backup role, rushing for just 226 yards and three touchdowns on 74 carries, the lowest totals of his career so far. But his production has been steadily declining in recent years.

Ezekiel Elliott’s NFL career so far

Ezekiel Elliott‘s career began with a bang in Dallas, where he led the NFL in rushing yards as a rookie in 2016 and again in 2018, earning three Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro honors. He spent one season with the New England Patriots in 2023 before returning to the Cowboys.
