Experts suggest the Lakers consider parting ways with LeBron James sooner rather than later

At 40, LeBron James remains a basketball marvel, still orchestrating offenses, still closing games, still one of the NBA’s finest playmakers.

Yet for the Los Angeles Lakers, his presence has shifted from a clear asset to a strategic liability. A trade, once unthinkable for the six-time champion, may now represent the smartest move, both for him and the franchise.

James is playing on an expiring one-year deal worth $52.6 million, a contract he opted into without finalizing a longer extension with the Lakers.

The team, meanwhile, has declared a new direction: centering its future around 26-year-old All-Star Luka Doncic and 27-year-old promising guard Austin Reaves, signaling that the era of rebuilding around the ageless star may have quietly passed.

For the Lakers, the argument for moving on from LeBron hinges on several interlocking realities: the trio of James, Doncic, and Reaves offers rare offensive firepower but displays defensive shortcomings; James is an injury risk at his age; and financially, trading him now could free up space and acquire younger, more complementary pieces.

Why timing matters now

From a purely basketball-fit perspective, pairing James and Doncic, which on paper reads like a dream tandem, has exposed issues.

The trio’s overlapping skill sets mean each pulls from the same offensive tools, while the defensive shortcomings compound when all three are on the court.

Then there is LeBron‘s body. In his prime, he was nearly iron man durable. Now, hampered by a sciatic flare and other issues, his physical decline is simply part of the equation.

Combine that with his one-year deal and no guarantee beyond this season, and what’s left is a star with enormous value with an equally enormous risk.

From a front-office lens, the Lakers now face key strategic decisions. Are they building for today, trying to squeeze one more title from a 40-year-old?

Given the loaded Western Conference and the changes required to contend, the easier path may be to trade LeBron now, while he still holds value, and retool.

Multiple teams have already asked about LeBron. The Golden State Warriors, for instance, have reached out repeatedly in the past 18 months to test the Lakers‘ willingness to deal him.

A trade at the midseason deadline or next summer could bring back younger roster pieces, draft picks, or future flexibility, a meaningful return given his declining window.

For LeBron himself, a trade could offer benefits too: joining a contender that fits his need to win, shedding the weight of rebuilding, and possibly preserving his legacy by playing meaningful minutes rather than being treated as a placeholder.
