Ex-NBA star says Mahomes poised for “Steph Curry-style” resurgence

A former NBA champion is tipping Patrick Mahomes for a dramatic turnaround this season, drawing parallels to the way Stephen Curry has transformed his own career in moments of adversity.

With the Kansas City Chiefs off to a 0-2 start, expectations are rising that the veteran quarterback will lean into his resilience the way Curry has so many times.

The comment came from a respected voice in basketball, who pointed to how Curry has repeatedly adjusted, whether through refining his shot selection, expanding his impact when defenses double him, or adopting new roles to keep himself not just relevant but dominant.

The suggestion is that Mahomes, too, has the tools and experience to wrest back momentum after early stumbles.

On a recent episode of the Club 520 Podcast, former champion point guard, Jeff Teague, drew a direct comparison between Mahomes and the Golden State Warriors superstar, Stephen Curry.

Reflecting on Curry‘s career arc-early dominance, a dip in performance, and then a dramatic resurgence-Teague predicted Mahomes is headed for something similar.

“It’s going to be like Steph Curry,” Teague said. “Remember when Steph, they had that run? Then it was them couple of years they was a-, and then he put it back together one more time and they won the chip.”

He emphasized, “He going to have a moment like that. They about to lose the next two years, and then he going to get a couple young dudes. Yeah. And he going to make another magical run in like year 10, year 11.”

Why the Curry comparison makes sense

Curry led the Warriors to a historic run in the mid-2010s, capped by three championships in four years.

But after injuries, roster turnover, and Kevin Durant‘s departure, Golden State hit a slump. Many wondered if Curry’s dominance was over.

Instead, he adjusted his game, leaned on new teammates, and ultimately returned to championship form in 2022.

For Mahomes, the NFL’s version of that journey could be unfolding now. The Chiefs’ slow start has exposed gaps in their roster and made some question whether their dynasty window is closing.

But just as Curry found ways to reinvent his impact on the court, Mahomes has a proven ability to adapt.

His creativity outside the pocket, willingness to spread the ball, and command of late-game situations suggest he has the tools to bounce back when circumstances improve.

Teague’s prediction that Kansas City may “lose the next two years” before Mahomes assembles a younger core echoes how Curry regained success with a rebuilt supporting cast.

If the Chiefs retool around their star quarterback, his peak years could stretch well into the next decade.
