Former Miami defensive end and 2026 NFL Draft prospect Rueben Bain Jr., who is considered a potential target for the Kansas City Chiefs, was involved in a 2024 car accident in which a female passenger later died from injuries sustained, according to a report published Sunday.

NFL Draft prospect case involving Rueben Bain Jr. comes to light

Bain was cited for reckless driving following the crash, which occurred around 4:00 a.m. on March 17, 2024, on northbound Interstate 95 in Miami, according to documents obtained by The Read Optional.

The report indicates that Bain was driving a 2021 Land Rover SUV with three passengers: Hurricanes players Wesley Bissainthe and Nyjalik Kelly, along with 22-year-old Destiny Betts. The vehicle rear-ended another car, swerved into a concrete barrier, and bounced before coming to a stop on the shoulder.

Betts was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, where she remained in a coma for nearly three months before passing away on June 13, 2024, due to her injuries.

Bain was cited at the time of the accident, though the charges were dropped prior to Betts’ death. The report also notes that no field sobriety tests were conducted at the scene.

In a statement to The Read Optional, Betts’ family described the event as a “tragic accident” and expressed their wishes for Bain to move forward with his life and career.

The player was in his sophomore year of college when the incident occurred.

Currently, he is ranked No. 15 on Mel Kiper Jr.’s Big Board ahead of the NFL Draft. In 2025, he delivered a standout junior season at Miami, recording 9.5 sacks, 15.5 tackles for loss, and leading the nation in quarterback pressures, helping the Hurricanes reach the College Football Playoff national championship game.
