Ex-Chiefs coach issues strong verdict on Shedeur Sanders’ future at browns

Shedeur Sanders looks ready to take the NFL by storm. With the drama of his 2025 draft journey in the rearview mirror and the preseason fast approaching, the Cleveland Browns rookie has shown enough confidence and poise to capture the attention of former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards.

The Browns’ training camp has brought out the best in Sanders. Despite receiving the fewest reps among Cleveland’s four active quarterbacks, he currently boasts the highest completion percentage-an effort that earned him Mandatory Minicamp MVP honors.

Determined to rise up the depth chart, Sanders has stayed late after practices to get more reps. Noticing his hustle, Edwards delivered a clear message to the Browns’ other quarterbacks: watch out for Sanders when the preseason lights turn on.

“He knows how to do things”

In an interview with 92.3 The Fan, Edwards praised Sanders’ approach, noting that he’s carried himself like a professional even before getting drafted. “He’s a pro. He knows how to do things. He’s going about it the right way,” said the coach-turned-analyst.

“When the lights come on and they start playing in the preseason-look out,” Edwards warned. Reflecting on what he’s seen so far, the former Chiefs coach added, “The eye test tells me he’s going to find a way to beat those guys out.”

Of course, the road won’t be easy. Drafted in the sixth round, Sanders faces stiff competition from veteran Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel-each of whom has seen more action in camp so far.

Deion’s legacy, double-edged

Still, Edwards pointed out the complex legacy Sanders carries as the son of Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders. According to Edwards, Shedeur’s draft slide may have been influenced by teams wary of his famous father’s outsized persona.

“I think the glare of who he is-and who his father is-made a lot of teams hesitant,” Edwards said. While Deion has played a major role in shaping his son’s journey to the NFL, that same presence might now cast a long shadow.

So, can Shedeur escape it and forge his own path in Cleveland? The competition is real, but Edwards-and the Browns’ coaching staff-will be watching closely.
