Once again, the 49ers are the NFL team with the most injuries, as they were in 2024. After three weeks, they have already lost their top defensive player, Nick Bosa, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his right knee.Additionally, George Kittle is also out indefinitely.
Other players remain sidelined: wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk isn’t close to returning, while Brock Purdy suffered two injuries in the Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks: one to his left toe and another to his left shoulder.
The toe injury was what kept Purdy out of action, causing him to miss games against the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals, in which Mac Jones started. The truth is, Jones performed well, guiding the 49ers to victory in both games.
It appears Brock Purdy will return next Sunday against the Jaguars
Despite Mac Jones’ solid performance, it’s important to remember that Purdy signed a five-year contract worth $265 million during the offseason. Therefore, once he’s ready, he will immediately take over the 49ers’ offense, and it seems that moment is approaching.
Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the 49ers, told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network: “I think (the toe) feels better every day, and if that continues, he should be ready on Sunday.”
Even with his likely return as starter, Purdy will need to improve after his Week 1 performance against the Seahawks, where he threw two touchdown passes but was also intercepted twice. Protecting the football will be the quarterback’s top priority.
