Mike Breen, the esteemed voice of the NBA Finals for nearly two decades, has recently opened up about the physical toll that his broadcasting career is taking on his health.

Known for his iconic “BANG!” call, Breen has been a constant presence in NBA arenas, delivering high-energy commentary that has become synonymous with the sport. However, the demands of his profession are beginning to manifest in ways that even his unwavering passion can’t mask.

During a recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show,Breen discussed the challenges he faces due to the overwhelming noise levels in NBA arenas.

He explained, “Well, you can always hear yourself because of the headphones, but there’s often, like I couldn’t hear the whistle last night a few times. Couldn’t hear the whistle in OKC.” The intense atmosphere, amplified by roaring crowds and blaring music, forces him to increase the volume on his headphones to hear his colleagues and the on-court action clearly.

This practice, while effective in the short term, is contributing to his deteriorating hearing over time. Breen acknowledged the long-term risks, stating, “It’s hard on the hearing in terms of long-term hearing.”

The exhaustion of high-stakes broadcasting

The physical demands of calling high-stakes games are also taking a toll on Breen. He admitted that after intense matchups, he often feels physically drained. “Oh especially with a game like last night, you’re tired because it’s a long day of preparation,” he shared.

Despite the fatigue, the excitement of the game keeps him engaged. However, the adrenaline doesn’t always allow for immediate rest.

Breen revealed that following thrilling games, he struggles to fall asleep due to the excitement, saying, “You can’t go to sleep for hours. You’re so wound up, especially when you see a game that good, you wanna talk about it.”

To counteract the strain on his voice and ensure he’s prepared for each broadcast, Breen has adopted specific routines. He avoids phone conversations, as advised by an ear, nose, and throat specialist, to prevent further strain.

Instead, he focuses on vocal rest and hydration, consuming tea with honey to soothe his throat. These practices help him recover and maintain the clarity and energy his broadcasts are known for.

A legacy of dedication

Mike Breen‘s commitment to his craft is evident in his willingness to share the personal challenges he faces.

His transparency not only humanizes the figure behind the microphone but also highlights the physical demands placed on broadcasters who bring the game to life for audiences worldwide.

As Breen continues his illustrious career, his resilience and dedication serve as an inspiration to both aspiring broadcasters and fans alike.
