Erling Haaland could become Premier League greatest ever goalscorer

Erling Haaland was once again crucial for Manchester City, as the Norwegian superstar striker scored twice against Everton to give his team a 2-0 win on the Premier League.

There’s no denial that Haaland is destined for greatness, something that even rivals like Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher knows. “I think we’re watching the greatest goalscorer to ever play in English football,” were Carragher‘s bold words on Sky Sports last weekend

Given Erling‘s form this season, it’s hard to argue against him. The Manchester City superstar has been on a tear in the 2025/26 campaign, netting 11 goals in eight Premier League matches and 23 in 13 games across all competitions for club and country.

Dominance like Cristiano or Messi

Haaland’s numbers are staggering – the kind of dominance once reserved for Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi during their prime years in Spain. Since bursting onto the scene as a teenager at Molde, Haaland‘s career has been a masterclass in goal-scoring consistency.

He scored 12 goals in 25 games in Norway before Red Bull Salzburg signed him, where he quickly outgrew the Austrian league with 16 goals in 14 matches. Then came Borussia Dortmund, where Haaland delivered 49 goals in 52 Bundesliga appearances, announcing himself as one of the world’s deadliest forwards.

When Manchester City won the race to sign him, it was clear they were getting something special – and he’s more than delivered on that promise. Even with what many called an “off season” in 2024/25, Haaland‘s goal output remains unprecedented. He set the single-season Premier League record with 36 goals in his debut campaign, followed by tallies of 27 and 22 in the next two years.

Erling could soon surpass an icon

Now sitting four goals shy of 100 Premier League goals, Haaland could soon surpass Alan Shearer‘s record as the fastest player to reach that milestone – if he hits it within his next 20 games.

His minutes-per-goal ratio is the best in league history, by a wide margin. If he maintains that pace and plays his typical 2,600+ minutes per season, projections suggest he could eclipse Shearer‘s all-time record of 260 goals within six more seasons – well before his current contract ends in 2034.

In short: Haaland doesn’t just have a chance to break Shearer‘s record. He might obliterate it. When it comes to pure finishing instinct, Erling is already in a class of his own. His efficiency inside the box, ability to find half-chances, and ruthless composure in front of goal evoke comparisons to the Premier League‘s greatest penalty-box predators – from Michael Owen and Andrew Cole to Ruud van Nistelrooy, Jamie Vardy, and Sergio Agüero.

Like Van Nistelrooy, Haaland‘s game thrives on anticipation and positioning. Like Vardy, he uses raw pace and aggression to terrify defenders. And like Agüero, he combines minimal backlift with maximum power. Yet Haaland‘s conversion rate and scoring consistency already surpass them all.
