Enzo Fernandez’s Madrid ambition fuels tension at Chelsea

Enzo Fernandez is in the spotlight in England, as revealed today by The Telegraph with inside information from the dressing room. With the team eliminated (thrashed) by PSG in the Champions League and far from the form shown in June with the Conference and Club World Cup titles, the focus is on the biggest debt in Premier League history (£300 million last season)… and some stars looking for the exit door, especially the 25-year-old Argentine, winner of the 2022 World Cup and under contract until 2032 at Chelsea, where he arrived in 2023.

The fact is that his attitude on the pitch, arguing with several teammates, has raised eyebrows in the dressing room, where he also had a strong row with goalkeeper Jorgensen in the tie against PSG, as well as other players who have been seen being scolded on the pitch by him for one reason or another.

To all this is added the ‘tour’ through different media dropping his tastes to stay in Madrid, although his starting price would not fall below 100 million euros. “The best I played against… Kroos and Modric, incredible although they eliminated us in that quarter-final match at the Bernabeu…” he said recently, an admiration, especially towards the German, that has been going on for years, as he showed on social networks when Toni announced his retirement. “I would like to live in Spain. I really like Madrid, it reminds me of Buenos Aires,” he said on a podcast. “I would live in Madrid. The footballer lives wherever he wants.”

Before, on ESPN, after the Champions League elimination at the hands of PSG, he also questioned his continuity with the Blues: “I don’t know. There are eight games left and the FA Cup. There’s the World Cup and then we’ll see.”

“This is Chelsea, not a stepping stone to another team. If your heart is already in Madrid, you shouldn’t be wearing the blue shirt. At Chelsea, we played for the badge, not for a future transfer,” says Obi Mikel, a Blues legend, now in turmoil since Maresca’s departure. “Which has created some instability,” admits Cucurella, another who has made eyes at a possible call from Barcelona.
