Emmitt Smith calls out players for Cowboys’ Super Bowl drought: “They have to take ownership”

Emmitt Smith, the legendary Hall of Fame running back who helped lead the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl victories in the 1990s, recently voiced some passionate remarks regarding the team’s prolonged absence from NFL’s pinnacle.

At a “Blue Carpet” event celebrating the upcoming Netflix docuseries America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys, Smith offered a pointed critique of both the franchise’s leadership and its players.

The Netflix series, set to begin streaming on August 19, 2025, revisits the Cowboys’ glory days under Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson, blending archival footage with interviews featuring icons like Troy Aikman, Smith himself, Michael Irvin, Charles Haley, Deion Sanders, and more.

The show arrives as Dallas approaches three full decades without a championship, sparking renewed scrutiny of its organizational culture.

Reclaiming accountability

During a conversation with media at the premiere, Smith delivered a reality check. “Jerry never caught a pass. He never ran a ball, and he damn sure didn’t throw one,” Smith declared, emphasizing that players themselves must take responsibility for on-field outcomes.

Smith’s stance echoes his broader point: while ownership has significant influence, it’s ultimately the players who must execute under pressure.

This theme of accountability isn’t new. Smith has long expressed frustration over the Cowboys’ ongoing failure to return to Super Bowl contention. On multiple occasions, he lamented that an organization with Dallas’ history should at least challenge for the NFC title “once or twice every decade”, a sentiment he described as a “crying shame.”

He also critiqued the team’s direction, stating that the Cowboys have drifted from a culture of urgency and leadership into one of complacency and following, rather than leading.

Smith’s frustration was especially evident when discussing rivals. The success of the Philadelphia Eagles, having secured two Super Bowl wins in the last two decades, only serves to heighten the sting of Dallas’ drought. “I’m sick of hearing ‘Go Birds,'” he admitted, echoing his feelings of irritation over repeated fan taunts.

As he weighed in on the docuseries and the franchise’s 30year drought, Emmitt Smith made it clear: talent alone isn’t enough. The true missing ingredient is leadership and a relentless drive to win, values he believes are just as vital today as they were during the Cowboys’ dominant era.
