One of the surprises of NFL Week 4 took place at MetLife Stadium, where the New York Giants, led by rookie Jaxson Dart, defeated the previously undefeated Los Angeles Chargers 21-18. It was the first career start for the quarterback out of Ole Miss, selected in the first round of this year’s draft by Big Blue.
The victory, however, was overshadowed by a terrible situation. The Giants’ top player and star wide receiver, Malik Nabers, went down with an injury in the second quarter. Early indications suggest it could be a torn ACL. Tests scheduled for Monday will confirm the severity, but all signs point to a season-ending injury, with his return expected only next year.
Despite the loss of Nabers, Jaxson Dart stole the spotlight with a pair of touchdowns, while the Giants’ defense also stood out, making Justin Herbert look uncomfortable all game. They intercepted him twice and kept him off rhythm throughout.
Dart’s touchdown run came with a celebration dance – and Eli Manning had something to say about it
The last Ole Miss quarterback to suit up for the Giants was Eli Manning, who became a franchise legend by winning two Super Bowls against Tom Brady’s New England Patriots. Now, once again, New York has a quarterback from the same program.
Dart left solid numbers at Ole Miss, and in his NFL debut, he scored on a 15-yard rushing touchdown during the opening drive, finishing the play with a dance. Manning jokingly reacted on social media with the following comment referencing their alma mater: “There is an Ole Miss class that teaches us these dance moves.”
Dart also threw a touchdown pass, finishing the game 13 of 20 for 111 yards. However, the concerning part of his debut was the punishment he took: five sacks. The Giants’ medical staff monitored him closely, and his availability for next Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints remains uncertain.
The rookie quarterback recognized how vital the defense was in securing the win, saying: “Yeah, it was definitely a special ending to just start the journey. It wasn’t clean, it wasn’t easy. Our defense played awesome. I was just proud of our team believing until the end. I feel like we’ve been close in the past and our issue was just finishing. Happy guys were able to pull through and kind of have that momentum at the end of the game …”
