The results are conclusive. Canelo Alvarez won on the scorecards against Edgar Berlanga, there is no doubt about that, but the Puerto Rican considered himself a winner for what he achieved against the Mexican, although he is already receiving criticism, because he did not take advantage of his size to hurt his opponent.
Andre Rozier, Edgar Berlanga‘s former trainer, condemned him for not seeking to hurt the Mexican with his physical strengths, such as his greater reach and height.
“He was using his jab better than he did in the past, and that’s a good thing. What I didn’t like is that he fought on the back foot, that he retreated. He was the bigger guy physically. He should have emphasized his size difference, been more physical, pushed him around,” Rozier said in a clear criticism of Berlanga.
More advice for Edgar Berlanga
“Sometimes you have to make a fight turn into a dogfight to win it. A lot of people ask me what I think of that performance against Canelo. I’m not going to criticize him or humiliate him, but you can’t celebrate that you came up short and that’s something that can’t happen to you, really,” Rozier sentenced.
But Edgar Berlanga, immediately after losing to Canelo, gave a conference where he listed his shortcomings, but already weeks after the defeat, he assured that in a rematch he would beat Saul Alvarez. “I think I should have thrown more combinations. There are many things I should have done and didn’t do.”
In addition, not only did Berlanga consider himself a winner, he also lost his undefeated run against Canelo and now his career could have difficulties in finding bigger opponents.
