Eddie Hearn, promoter of Anthony Joshua, says losing to the influencer would be an “unthinkable” embarrassment

The showdown between fully trained boxer Anthony Joshua and influencer-turned-fighter Jake Paul is gaining intensity as the December 19 date approaches in Miami. In the days leading up to the event, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has repeatedly stated that his fighter will settle the contest within only a few rounds. Highlighting the vast difference in background and experience,

Hearn points to Joshua’s 28-4 record with 25 knockouts versus Paul’s 12-1 mark with 7 KOs. For Hearn, the fight should effectively end the moment Joshua’s punches land flush on Paul’s chin.

Although Paul has proven he is no longer merely a gimmick in the boxing world, showing genuine punching power, the promoter insists the gap between a lifelong professional and a late arrival remains immense.

The compelling reasons for Joshua to topple Paul

Many analysts and fans believe Joshua accepted this matchup primarily because of the lucrative purse offered. From their perspective, the bout provides limited sporting value for a fighter of Joshua’s stature.

Yet hovering over the event is a real and potentially damaging risk: if Joshua were to lose to Paul, the ridicule would be overwhelming, and his career could suffer severe consequences. It is worth recalling that Joshua last fought on September 21, 2024, when he was defeated by Daniel Dubois. Since then, he has focused on recovering from that setback, and his inactivity might represent a disadvantage as fight night draws near.

The Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, will host the eight-round contest, which will stream worldwide on Netflix. As Hearn remarked, “

Father Christmas came early with 400 sacks full of cash, and said, ‘AJ, would you like your greatest Christmas yet?’ And we said, ‘Yes, please.’ And that’s basically how the fight was made.

AJ’s team must avoid every possible risk in this fight against Jake Paul

The financial offer was undoubtedly the main reason Joshua agreed to face Paul. After this event, he hopes to return to boxing’s elite scene with a potential showdown against Tyson Fury, a challenge he continues to pursue. He also keeps in view a possible trilogy against Oleksandr Usyk in 2026. Hearn stressed how bold Paul is for accepting the fight, stating,

He’s [Jake] mad as a hatter taking the fight. The fight will end whenever Anthony Joshua wants the fight to end.” Hearn also emphasized Joshua’s substantial payday: “He’s getting a near career-high payday. Thank you, Jake Paul and MVP, for the opportunity. How can we turn it down? I’m not going to sit here and tell you it’s fight of the year.” For Paul, the attraction lies in the spectacle itself.

Eddie Hearn

Hearn concluded,

The only person it’s dangerous for is Jake Paul. He’s absolutely mad. Don’t start talking to me about, ‘Is there anything in the contract where you have to take it easy?’ No, in fact, exactly the opposite. We’re going to go in there and get it done in double quick time, destroy him, and get on the plane and then go home for Christmas. It’s not going four rounds. The fight’s over as soon as AJ hits Jake Paul on the chin.
