Ed Sheeran may be a star when he’s on stage performing, but offstage, he’s notoriously disconnected from his phone.
That low-tech approach recently left the British singer-songwriter out of the loop on some major personal news: the engagement of his longtime friend Taylor Swift to NFL star Travis Kelce.
Swift announced her engagement on Instagram in August, and like much of the world, Sheeran only found out after the fact. The news prompted a lengthy catch-up session between the two pop icons.

Swift admitted that Sheeran‘s phone-free lifestyle was the reason she hadn’t told him about the engagement sooner. During an October appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she joked about the challenge of keeping him updated, explaining that he doesn’t have a phone.
“This is one thing I love about him … but when I’m going through, saying, ‘Hey, who should we call? Who should we FaceTime?’ I’m going through my texts and being like, ‘Who have I texted within the last like, month of my life?'” she said.
A wedding performance in the works?
While Sheeran may have been late to hear the big news, fans can expect him to play a more active role at Swift‘s upcoming wedding. On the U.K.’s Hits Radio Breakfast Show in October, Swift confirmed that Sheeran will be on the guest list and hinted that the singer is likely to take the stage during the reception.
“It’s like, Ed, if there’s a stage you know that you’ll be on it,” Swift said. “He knows what people want, and he wants to give people what they want.”
Given Sheeran‘s reputation as a live performer, an impromptu wedding set seems almost inevitable. The couple’s nuptials are shaping up to be an intimate yet star-studded affair, and Sheeran’s participation promises a special moment for both the newly engaged pair and their guests.
Despite his digital detachment, Sheeran clearly maintains strong personal connections. His four-hour catch-up with Swift demonstrates that even without instant notifications, he values the long-standing relationships.
