The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 20-17 at Arrowhead Stadium in a Super Bowl LIX rematch, but the win came without rhythm or polish as the veteran tackle Lane Johnson captured the night’s reality with a blunt reminder for Jalen Hurts.
Arrowhead Stadium hosted 73,558 fans for the high-stakes clash on Sunday, September 14 as the Eagles leaned on resilience rather than finesse, controlling the clock for more than 32 minutes.
Despite visible struggles on offense, Philadelphia executed in decisive moments to hand Kansas City another defeat in a growing rivalry that has seen them meet twice in the Super Bowl previously.
However, it raised questions about the long-term prospects for Nick Sirianni‘s team if they’re forced to win ugly, much like how the Chiefs have done through 2023 and 2024, and johnson echoed those concerns.
“I hope so,” Johnson said, of continuing to win. “If it comes down to shitty, ugly football that we’re barely winning, I’ll take it.
“Would you like it to be that way? No. But we spend a lot of time working on this game to try to win those things.”
His comments underscored a central theme of the night: survival mattered more than style against an inspired Patrick Mahomes, who continuously scrambled well to keep the home side in the contest.
For the Eagles, the running came was the key as Saquon Barkley contributed 88 of the team’s 122 rushing yards whilst special teams also played their roles as Jake Elliott drilled field goals from 58 and 51 yards to keep KC at arm’s length.
But there was also a huge slice of luck when Mahomes, who threw for 187 yards and a touchdown, found Kelce in the red zone only for the 35-year-old tight end to drop the ball in the fourth quarter on a second-and-goal.
The moment would have pulled the Chiefs ahead at 16-13, but instead the Eagles managed to survive and eventually sealed the deal when Hurts got over the line with the Tush Push to make it a 20-10 game, even if Mahomes later found Ty Thornton to make it a nervy finish at 20-17.
Jalen Hurts Week 2 stats vs Kansas City Chiefs
The Super Bowl champion came into the game following a strong performance against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, proving that he is picking up from where he left off in New Orleans back in February.
And it was a similar story against the Chiefs as Hurts put up 101 passing yards on 15 completions (68.2%) for no passing touchdowns or interceptions, as he was sacked twice by the KC defense on Sunday – although he did compensate his afternoon with 15 rushing yards for one touchdown with the Tush Push.
He now turns his attention to the Week 3 clash with the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, September 21 at the Lincoln Financial Field, with kick-off from 13:00 ET/10:00 PT – a rematch of their 2024/25 NFC Divisional Game.
