Eagles surprise with the hiring of a young former QB as offensive coordinator

The Philadelphia Eagles are turning to youth and fresh perspective to reset their offense. Philadelphia officially hired Sean Mannion, the Green Bay Packers’ quarterbacks coach, as its new offensive coordinator, the team announced Thursday night.

At just 33 years old, Mannion becomes one of the youngest offensive coordinators in the NFL – a bold move for a franchise seeking offensive stability after a disappointing and uneven season.

Head coach Nick Sirianni praised the hire in a team statement, emphasizing Mannion’s football intellect and long-term potential.

I’m thrilled to have Sean Mannion on board as the new offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles

Nick Sirianni

“It was quickly apparent in meeting with Sean that he is a bright young coach with a tremendous future ahead of him in this league.”

Sirianni added that Mannion’s background as a former NFL quarterback gives him a strong understanding of offensive structure and game planning.

“I was impressed by his systematic views on offensive football and his strategic approach,” Sirianni continued.

Sean’s 11 years in the NFL have provided him a great opportunity to learn from and grow alongside some of the best coaches in the game.

According to The Athletic, Mannion is expected to handle play-calling duties, though Sirianni will still maintain influence over the offense. Contract terms were not disclosed.

Why the Eagles are betting on Mannion’s upside

Mannion replaces Kevin Patullo, who lasted just one season as offensive coordinator before being relieved of his duties following the Eagles’ wild-card round playoff exit. The change comes after an offensive regression that raised concerns across the organization.

Philadelphia finished the 2025 season ranked 19th in points per game (22.3), 23rd in passing yards (194.3), and 24th in total offense (311.2). Quarterback Jalen Hurts saw his completion percentage dip from 68.7% in 2024 to 64.8% in 2025, finishing 11th among 43 quarterbacks in Pro Football Focus grading.

Mannion’s appeal is rooted in his recent work developing quarterbacks. In his lone season as Green Bay’s QB coach, Jordan Love delivered one of the most efficient years of his career, throwing for 3,381 yards with 23 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Love’s interception rate (1.4%) was the lowest of his career, while his 66.3% completion rate marked a full-season high.

That success helped elevate Mannion’s reputation despite his limited coaching résumé. Before joining Green Bay’s staff, Mannion spent a decade in the NFL as a backup quarterback, most recently appearing in games during the 2023 season.

The Eagles are hoping his quarterback-centric approach can help maximize Hurts’ skill set while re-energizing a passing attack that never fully found its rhythm.

Offensive frustration boiled over at times during the season, particularly involving wide receiver A.J. Brown. Trade rumors surfaced ahead of the deadline, especially after Brown declined media availability following multiple dropped passes in the playoff loss.

General manager Howie Roseman addressed those rumors shortly after the season ended.

It’s hard to find great players in the NFL and A.J.’s a great player,

Howie Roseman

“When we go out in free agency and the draft, we’re trying to find great players who love football – and he’s that guy.”

With Mannion now in charge of the offense, the Eagles are betting that innovation, efficiency, and quarterback development can restore a unit that once powered a Super Bowl run. Whether the gamble on youth pays off will be one of the league’s most intriguing storylines heading into next season.
