Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts addressed the ongoing AJ Brown controversy, calling it a “distraction” as the team navigates the season as the Eagles have seven wins in nine games but have struggled to find consistency.
Under coordinator Kevin Patullo, the team has relied heavily on the running game through Hurts and Saquon Barkley, whilst DaVonta Smith leads the receiving way. That means Brown has recorded just over 400 receiving yards this season.
He caught only two passes for 13 yards in the Eagles’ 10-7 win over the Green Bay Packers and frustrations have been apparent through cryptic social media posts and public statements criticizing the offense as tensions boil over.
During a Twitch stream, Brown labeled the Eagles a “s**t show” and suggested fantasy owners drop him before the 28-year-old NFL player defended his actions.
“It’s not that I was throwing anybody under the bus,” Brown said, following up afterwards. “I’m literally trying to laugh through this s**t.”
He ultimately refused to apologize for the remarks before Hurts was asked about Brown’s comments and whether he approved of them. The quarterback responded cautiously, looking to protexct team harmony.
“We’ve got the Detroit Lions, so I’m going to definitely put a halt to that,” Hurts said. “I think the more we drive that, the more of a distraction it becomes and I think ultimately it’s about the group.”
“Obviously, A.J. (Brown) plays a pivotal role in what we’ve been. And what we’ve done, and we have to continue to grow with that every day.
“I know he’s talked about having a growth mindset and embracing that, so we need to have that mentality as we go through this season to go to where we want to go.”
Despite Hurts’ attempts to manage the situation, Brown’s celebrations have occasionally caused speculation about his mood and potential future at the Lincoln Financial Field.
In Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings, Brown exceeded 100 receiving yards and performed a touchdown celebration fans suggested was directed at Hurts as issues rage on behind closed doors with the Super Bowl champions.
Eagles receive substantial boost ahead of Lions game
The Eagles prepare for a Sunday night clash against the Detroit Lions without tight end Sam LaPorta, who has been ruled out due to a back injury ahead of the meeting before the NFC juggernauts.
LaPorta’s absence removes a key middle-of-the-field option and affects Detroit’s efficiency on third-down situations – forcing them to rely more on Amon-Ra St. Brown and their running game.
Additional Lions injuries include Marcus Davenport, D.J. Reed, Malcolm Rodriguez, and Miles Frazier, all inactive; whilst wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa is questionable with an oblique issue, forcing the offense to adjust its strategy to maintain tempo and effectiveness.
Coach Ben Johnson is expected to lean on Brock Wright as the primary inline option, mixing in Ross Dwelley for heavier personnel sets whilst St. Brown and Jameson Williams will receive increased targets in quick passes to help Jared Goff maintain offensive rhythm.
Detroit must protect the quarterback and execute with discipline as Philadelphia’s defensive front exploits hesitation, and without LaPorta as an option, this could go in favor of the Eagles on November 16.
