Two people were shot Friday as Philadelphia Eagles fans packed the Spring Garden neighborhood to celebrate the team’s Super Bowl LIX victory, local authorities confirmed. The shooting took place at the intersection of 23rd and Spring Garden streets, though details about what led to the incident remain unclear. Crowds had gathered in the area as part of the city’s championship parade, which was expected to draw more than a million people. Here you can see the video of the sea of people after the shooting.
Shooting at the Eagles Parade
A CBS News helicopter captured footage of the scene, showing people scattered around an ambulance, with a stretcher visible behind a truck. Police recovered a firearm from the sidewalk near the incident, but no further details have been released. Social media outlets are reporting that police are looking for a suspect wearing a gray Eagles jersey. But to be honest, it will be hard to find him among the thousands of fans in gray Eagles jerseys at the parade. He may have already changed or removed his jersey, but this person should be punished for his inhumane acts at a celebratory event, a sad situation.
The two victims are two women, and the shooting occurred around 2:35 p.m. ET on a highway near the 2300 block of Ben Franklin Parkway, just outside the parade area, according to the Philadelphia Police Department. Paramedics took the two women to Presbyterian Hospital, where they are in stable condition. One woman, 27, was shot in the leg, while the other, 20, was shot in the thigh. There is no word yet on the shooter, who was reportedly wearing a gray Eagles jersey.
Second Super Bowl Parade Tragedy in Two Years
The shooting comes exactly one year after a mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade left one person dead and 22 others injured by gunfire. An additional 18 people required medical attention for non-gunshot injuries. Four suspects – two adults and two juveniles – were later charged in connection with the attack. Authorities have yet to confirm whether any arrests have been made in connection with Friday’s shooting in Philadelphia.
The situation is extremely sad because people will be celebrating, including children. What starts as a celebration for some will end in tragedy, I do not understand the need to bring a gun to a public event. Hopefully the aggressor will be found and punished as he deserves and worse because it is not fair to the tens of thousands of people at the event to have to worry when the event is to CELEBRATE!
