Eagles’ Jalen Carter ejected for spitting on Dak Prescott: Facing possible suspension?

Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter, who had built a reputation as a model teammate through his first three NFL seasons, is suddenly at the center of controversy after being ejected before playing a single snap in Thursday’s season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

Officials tossed Carter from the game after he spit on quarterback Dak Prescott prior to the Cowboys‘ first offensive play.

The stunning act of misconduct left Philadelphia without one of its key defensive linemen and handed Carter what amounted to a de facto one-game suspension.

Will the NFL take further action?

The league is now reviewing the incident, and discipline beyond the ejection remains a possibility. According to sources who spoke with Pro Football Talk, how Carter responds publicly could play a significant role in what happens next.

If the 23-year-old is contrite and accepts responsibility, the league may stop at the ejection. If not, officials could seek a stronger penalty to reinforce expectations of professionalism.

Respect for opponents has been a major point of emphasis for the NFL this season, a message delivered repeatedly to both players and clubs during the offseason.

For Carter to cross that line before the first series of the year is seen by some within the league as the ultimate display of disrespect. That may increase pressure on commissioner Roger Goodell‘s office to make an example out of the former first-round pick.

A jarring contrast

Carter‘s behavior comes as a surprise to many. Since arriving in Philadelphia, he had largely avoided the off-field questions that followed him during the 2023 draft process. Coaches and teammates often praised his maturity and work ethic as he developed into one of the anchors of the Eagles‘ defensive front.

Now, after one moment of poor judgment, that image has been called into question.

Whether Carter receives an additional suspension or simply a fine, the league’s handling of the situation will send a message to players about accountability and conduct.

As one league source told PFT, Carter‘s actions were “the exact kind of thing” the NFL was hoping to eliminate when it stressed respect between opponents earlier this year.
