Eagles’ first off-season blow: Jalen Hurts to feel this one every time he’s on the field

After years of stability at the tight end position, the Philadelphia Eagles are facing a potential shake-up as trade rumors circulate around their star tight end, Dallas Goedert. Renowned for his versatility as both a pass-catcher and a blocker, Goedert has been a cornerstone of the Eagles’ offense since taking over the role from Zach Ertz. However, as financial pressures mount and his contract nears its expiration, speculation about Goedert’s future is intensifying.

The Eagles have enjoyed a seamless transition at the tight end position, moving from Ertz to Goedert without missing a beat as Jalen Hurts has been on the throwing end of this attack. Despite missing seven games last season due to injury, the 30-year-old tight end still managed an impressive 496 yards and 42 receptions. However, Goedert’s current contract, a four-year, $57 million deal, expires after the upcoming season, leaving the Eagles with a tough decision.

Goedert carries an $11.8 million cap hit in 2025, making him one of the team’s more expensive players. With the Eagles facing salary cap constraints and Goedert’s recent injury history raising concerns, trading him could provide both financial relief and valuable compensation.

A rival could benefit from this situation

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin recently floated the Chicago Bears as a hypothetical trade destination for Goedert. While the Bears already have Cole Kmet, who signed a four-year, $50 million extension last year, Goedert could bring stability to a position that has seen bouts of inconsistency. Additionally, assistant general manager Ian Cunningham, who worked with the Eagles when Goedert was drafted, could be an advocate for the move.

However, a trade to Chicago seems unlikely. Kmet’s sizable contract and the Bears’ other pressing roster needs would make adding another expensive tight end a questionable investment. Still, the rumors highlight Goedert’s value and the potential interest he could attract across the league.

For Philadelphia, the decision is not an easy one. On one hand, trading Goedert could free up cap space and secure future assets, especially if a trade occurs after June 1 to minimize dead money. On the other hand, Goedert is an integral part of the Eagles’ offensive system, and losing him could create a significant gap that would be difficult to fill.

Head coach Nick Sirianni recently addressed Goedert’s status, stating, “Right now, he’s on our football team… We’ll see how that plays out.” While noncommittal, the comments have added fuel to the speculation.

As the offseason unfolds, the Eagles will need to carefully evaluate their options. Whether they retain Goedert for another season or explore trade opportunities, their decision will have significant implications for their offense and financial strategy.
