Eagles face fast-approaching deadline on AJ Brown trade after rejecting Patriots’ big offer

All offseason, A.J. Brown‘s name has hovered around Philadelphia like unfinished business. The rumors never quite faded.

Now the situation may finally be approaching a decision point.

NFL insider Mike Garafolo said this week that the Philadelphia Eagles could settle Brown’s future within the next couple of days as contract deadlines approach. Speaking on The Anthony Gargano Show, Garafolo suggested the timing is not accidental.

“I think he gets moved. Today’s Friday, it’s gotta happen in the next two days,” Garafolo said during the interview.

The urgency comes from the financial structure of Brown’s contract.

The star receiver is currently playing under a three-year, $96 million extension, but the next phase of that deal is about to activate.

On the third day of the new NFL league year, $4 million tied to the 2027 season becomes fully guaranteed. Just one day later, his $29 million base salary for the 2026 season also locks in. Those details might sound like accounting footnotes, but they carry real consequences for Philadelphia.

According to contract data from Spotrac, Brown carries a $23.39 million cap hit, the second-largest number on the Eagles’ roster. The team currently holds a little more than $12 million in cap space.

If the guarantees activate and the team later decides to move Brown, the dead-cap hit could exceed $70 million, a scenario most front offices try to avoid.

How the Eagles offense gradually changed

When the Philadelphia Eagles traded for Brown from the Tennessee Titans during the 2022 NFL Draft, the move immediately reshaped the offense.

Brown quickly became one of quarterback Jalen Hurts’ most reliable weapons and played a major role in the team’s run to Super Bowl LVII.

Over his first two seasons in Philadelphia, he performed like one of the NFL’s elite wide receivers. His best year came in 2023, when he recorded 106 receptions on 158 targets, both career highs. But the identity of the Eagles’ offense has shifted in recent seasons.

The arrival of Saquon Barkley brought renewed focus to the running game. In his first year with Philadelphia, Barkley led the league with 2,005 rushing yards and 345 carries, according to official NFL statistics.

As the offense leaned more heavily on the ground attack, Brown’s share of targets gradually declined. His production remained strong, but the role he once had in the offense changed.

The frustration occasionally surfaced publicly. During the Eagles’ Wild Card playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, cameras captured a tense moment on the sideline when head coach Nick Sirianni approached Brown and instructed him to step away from the field.

The clip quickly circulated across sports media and fueled speculation that tensions inside the organization had reached a breaking point.

Patriots push for a deal but Eagles hold firm

Interest in Brown has already emerged around the league.

The New England Patriots have reportedly been the most aggressive team pursuing a trade. After moving on from Stefon Diggs, the franchise suddenly found itself searching for a proven No. 1 receiver.

Reports indicate New England offered a package that included a first-round pick and a third-round pick. The Eagles declined.

General manager Howie Roseman appears to be holding out for a larger return. Around the league, the expectation is that Philadelphia would want something closer to a first-round pick, a second-round pick, and a player.

That type of deal would reflect how highly Brown is still valued despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

A short window before the equation changes

The Philadelphia Eagles now face a narrow window to decide how they want to approach the situation.

If a trade happens before the contract guarantees activate, the team would gain both cap flexibility and potential draft capital ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.

If those deadlines pass, moving Brown becomes far more complicated financially.

For months, Brown’s future has been one of the biggest questions surrounding the Eagles’ offseason.

With those contract triggers approaching quickly, the answer may arrive sooner than anyone expected.

Reporting incorporates statements from NFL insider Mike Garafolo on The Anthony Gargano Show, salary-cap data from Spotrac, official NFL statistics, and contextual analysis from major sports media outlets including ESPN and NFL Network.
