Jaire Alexander is a hot commodity. The Green Bay Packers shocked the NFL by releasing the star cornerback on June 11 in what was purely an administrative move. Now, Alexander is on the radar of several teams-starting with the reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles.
In an effort to ease their challenging 2025 salary cap, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst made several unexpected moves, beginning with Alexander’s release. The 27-year-old cornerback had signed a four-year, $84 million extension in 2022.
As for the Eagles, the departures of cornerback Darius Slay and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson have left openings in their defensive backfield. While they currently have rising talent Kelee Ringo on the roster, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has floated Alexander as a potential game-changing addition for the defending champs.
It all comes down to price
Speaking on 97.5 The Fanatic, Schefter suggested that Alexander could be a strong fit for head coach Nick Sirianni’s defense-but only if the contract terms make sense. After restructuring his deal with Green Bay three years ago, the Louisville alum was averaging $20 million per year.
“Now, Jaire Alexander-if the price was right and you’re doing a one-year deal, whatever the number is-a low number-they can go make that work if that’s what they wanted to do,” Schefter explained.
Adding intrigue, Alexander has a strong connection with Eagles defensive backs coach Christian Parker, who helped mold him into an All-Pro during their time together in Green Bay from 2019 to 2020.
Barriers to a deal
Sirianni and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio have expressed full confidence in Ringo as a starter, and with preseason fast approaching, they may be hesitant to disrupt their plans. Additionally, Philadelphia is juggling several key contract negotiations for 2026, making cap space preservation a top priority.
A deal for Alexander remains a long shot-but in the NFL, surprises are the norm. With his elite talent, the Eagles’ front office may be tempted to take a second look.
