To understand the story of Dustin May, we must go back to 2023, a year that his family will surely want to forget, the Dodgers reliever needed emergency surgery last July due to a severe tear in his esophagus

After undergoing Tommy John surgery in the 2023 season, he was in the process of recovering at the Dodgers’Camelback Ranch complex in Arizona. On July 10, while there, he decided to go out to dinner, which marked a key moment in his recovery.

While sharing a meal with his wife, May suffered a serious incident when a piece of lettuce became lodged in his throat. When he tried to clear it with water, the situation worsened, causing a perforation in the esophagus and a tear that put his life at risk

The perfect return

May 17, 2023 was the last time Dustin May played for the Dodgers, and 685 days later he returned and did it in the best way

Dustin May threw a 96 mph fastball that hit Braves hitter Michael Harris II. He then walked off the mound, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd and sharing a smile with his teammates as the stadium erupted in applause.

Without a doubt, April 1, 2025, will be a date he will remember for the rest of his life, after that fight and recovery

Fortunately for him, the team did its thing and the Dodgers beat the Braves 3-1

The person who saved his life

Los Angeles Dodgers player Dustin May spoke to SportsNet LA, where he recounted everything that happened that night of his incident, as well as his wife, Amelia, who took him to the hospital

“It was definitely life or death. If I hadn’t gone to the hospital that night, I wouldn’t be here today. And I definitely have to thank my wife for that, for saving my life. Because I definitely wouldn’t have gone if I had been alone,” May commented with tears in his eyes

Amelia, his wife, confessed how difficult it was to keep her composure while waiting for his recovery, facing unpleasant comments that struck her reality. That nightmare finally ended and they both enjoy life.
