Drake Maye’s Super Bowl 60 odds: Why history and injuries are working against him

Drake Maye is set to lead the New England Patriots in his first Super Bowl appearance, marking an impressive rise for the second-year quarterback.

Despite his MVP-caliber season, some are skeptical about his chances of winning the big game at Levi Stadium on February 8.

The Patriots face the Seattle Seahawks, and questions have emerged not just about team matchups, but about the quarterback himself.

A viral post on social media has highlighted an unusual pattern regarding quarterbacks and their names. According to the post, no starting quarterback with a last name under five letters has ever won a Super Bowl.

Additionally, quarterbacks whose first and last names end in the same letter are reportedly 0-6 in Super Bowl history since the AFL-NFL merger.

Even more specifically, quarterbacks with the initials ‘D.M’. – like Dan Marino and Donovan McNabb – have gone 0-2 in Super Bowls.

While these observations are largely coincidental, they have fueled a lighthearted narrative surrounding Maye‘s upcoming challenge.

Maye set to play through the pain

Maye is entering the Super Bowl carrying the physical toll of a grueling season. The former University of North Carolina standout sustained a hard tackle on his right shoulder during the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos.

Despite the injury, he played through the pain to secure a Patriots 10-7 victory in the snow. Ahead of the Super Bowl, Maye reflected on his current state of fitness.

“I’m feeling good,” Maye told WEEI. “Going to get some extra rest. I really don’t think it was from the game, but just the build-up from throwing – this is what, including training camp, 30 weeks of straight of throwing, four days a week. It can add up.

“I got some extra rest, feeling good, and ready to go for the Super Bowl.”

Maye downplayed the injury, emphasizing the resilience of his teammates. “A lot of those guys in that locker room are battling through things,” he added, signaling that his shoulder issue is not expected to sideline him.

The Patriots‘ coaching staff has also adjusted Maye‘s preparation schedule.

Reports indicate that he would not have fully participated in Wednesday practice if the team had conducted a standard session, highlighting their caution with the young quarterback ahead of the league’s biggest game.

Despite these concerns, Maye‘s season has been nothing short of remarkable. He led the Patriots to a 14-3 regular-season record and a deep playoff run, restoring hope for a franchise that has been searching for a new face of leadership since the Tom Brady era.

A historic moment for a young quarterback

While Maye faces obstacles both literal and figurative, he also carries the weight of a historic opportunity.

Leading the Patriots to their first Super Bowl since Brady‘s departure, the 23-year-old is stepping into a spotlight few quarterbacks experience so early in their careers.

Veteran commentators are united in stating that Maye‘s combination of talent and mental toughness could offset his physical concerns.

As the Patriots prepare for the Super Bowl, all eyes will be on Maye. Will the young quarterback overcome the odds-both real and superstitious-to claim his first championship, or will the narrative surrounding his name continue to loom over the big game?

For now, the spotlight is on him, and the NFL waits to see how this historic chapter unfolds.
