The NFL season started like any other, but it had surprises in store for Drake Maye and the New England Patriots.
The quarterback lost the MVP and the Super Bowl in the same week, but still sent a hopeful message to his fans.
Maye makes a big promise to fans
This was undoubtedly a week to forget for Drake. His first defeat came after finishing second in the voting for the 2025-26 NFL MVP, losing to Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford by just one first-place vote just two days before the Big Game on February 6.
Then, Super Bowl LX turned green and blue to crown the Seattle Seahawks as the new champions after crushing the Patriots and Maye 13-29 at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, February 8. Sam Darnold and company took home the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the second time in franchise history since their historic 2013 crown, thanks to an impressive defense.
The Seahawks’ pressure overwhelmed Maye all night, sacking him six times and forcing three turnovers (two interceptions and one fumble). He completed only 27 of 43 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns.
Despite this, on Tuesday, Maye addressed Patriots fans directly after this painful defeat that left them one step away from their seventh Vince Lombardi Trophy:
“Appreciate the fans, their support,” Drake began, via NBC Sports’ Phil Perry. “I know I didn’t play as well as I would’ve liked down the stretch. Promise to do my best to work hard and get us back to those moments and those games. Can’t wait to get back to Gillette. Looking forward to next year.”
Patriots fans quickly responded with more support and affection for Maye: “That’s my quarterback,” “I LOVE DRAKE MAYE,” “It’s hard to get to the Super Bowl. Hoping we can one day go back,” were some of the messages fans left for the QB.
Although the end of this season was not what Maye and the Patriots had hoped for, the 23-year-old quarterback completed 354 of 492 passes for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, leading the league in completion percentage (72%), yards per attempt (8.9), and passer rating (113.5). He also contributed 450 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Meanwhile, looking ahead to the NFL offseason, Maye revealed that he will be part of the team’s training camp for the 2026/27 season, as he confirmed that he will not need surgery for his right shoulder injury.
