The Super Bowl always gives people something to talk about, and this time is no exception. In this edition, Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, will host Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks and Drake Maye and the New England Patriots on February 8 to crown a new champion.
However, at the pre-game press conference, the 23-year-old quarterback drew attention by choosing two female athletes to throw him a touchdown pass. And he received a response from the husband of one of them!
Maye praises two powerful female athletes
Drake is having a season that has made him a strong MVP candidate. After defeating the LA Chargers, Houston Texans, and Denver Broncos in the postseason, he is preparing to fight for victory against the Seahawks and lift the franchise’s first Vince Lombardi Trophy since the Tom Brady and Bill Belichick dynasty.
In the run-up to the game, Drake was answering several questions from the press on Monday at the San Jose Conversion Center, but one of his answers stole the show.

American flag football star Ashlea Klam asked the QB to choose a female athlete to throw a touchdown pass to, and without hesitation, Drake replied:
“You know, I’ve gotten into tennis a little more. A lot of respect for Serena Williams. She’s maybe one of the greatest of all time, greatest female athletes of all time,” he said with deep admiration and a smile.
He then mentioned the WNBA and Indiana Fever star: “And then I heard, you know, Caitlin Clark was pulling for us in the playoffs, so hopefully, catching a touchdown from Caitlin Clark would be cool,” he said, adding, “I know she’s a baller.”
Serena has made a name for herself at the top of tennis history, winning 23 Grand Slam singles titles, 14 Grand Slam doubles titles alongside her sister, Venus Williams, and four Olympic gold medals. Although she officially retired after the 2022 US Open, recent news indicates that the 44-year-old tennis player could return to the courts.
Meanwhile, Clark was already attracting attention during her time with the Iowa Hawkeyes. In 2024, she played her first season in the WNBA after being selected with the first pick in that year’s draft by the Indiana Fever. She broke multiple records and quickly established herself as one of the league’s visible faces, being named Rookie of the Year. However, the following year, injuries to her quadriceps, ankle, and groin forced Clark to end her second season early, playing only 13 games in total and averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 8.8 assists, and 1.6 steals.
For this reason, these words, and especially her choice of Williams and Clark, did not go unnoticed by sports fans, who praised and supported Maye in comments such as: “CC & Drake Maye let’s gooo!”, “Definitely Serena Williams,” “So hard to not love Drake Maye!”, and “Big Drake Maye fan.”
However, the comment that stood out the most was from the tennis player’s husband, Alexis Ohanian: “@serenawilliams has a good arm – same technique as serving, I learned,” wrote the co-founder and CEO of the website Reddit.
Meanwhile, Drake and the Patriots are still alive in their dream of winning another Super Bowl. This situation was unthinkable last season, given that the team finished with a 4-13 record and many uncertainties. That year, Maye had 13 games, 2,276 yards, 15 TDs, and 10 interceptions, but in his second season with the team, he showed a significant jump with 4,394 passing yards and 31 touchdowns, leading the team to a 14-3 record.
