Drake Maye charges Stefon Diggs after allowing him to earn a $500,000 incentive

The Week 17 matchup between the New England Patriots and the New York Jets already carried significant weight for a team pushing toward the postseason.

By the end of the afternoon, it also carried a financial reward for Stefon Diggs and a lighthearted bill for his quarterback, Drake Maye.

According to Spotrac, Stefon Diggs entered the game needing just four receptions to unlock a $500,000 contract incentive.

That threshold was reached midway through the second quarter when the veteran wideout hauled in a pass from Drake Maye, marking his fourth catch of the day. From that moment on, the result was two-fold: a dominant 42-10 road victory for New England and a half-million-dollar bonus secured.

After the game, Maye admitted he had no idea that his throw had triggered the incentive. Once informed, the second-year quarterback made his expectations clear, delivering the line of the day.

“No, but I’ll make sure to tell him he needs to buy me dinner. We’re not looking to hunt up incentives, we’re looking to hunt up wins,” the quarterback said after the game.

A steady resurgence for Stefon Diggs

The bonus served as a symbolic milestone in what has been a quietly productive season for Stefon Diggs.

The receiver joined the Patriots earlier this year following a frustrating 2024 campaign with the Houston Texans, where an ACL tear limited him to just eight games and disrupted his rhythm.

While his numbers no longer mirror the peak seasons he enjoyed with the Buffalo Bills, his role in New England‘s offense has been both consistent and valuable.

Heading into Week 17, Diggs had amassed 869 receiving yards on 76 catches with three touchdowns. He wasted little time hitting the incentive marker and went on to deliver one of his best performances of the season.

He finished the afternoon with six receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown, leading a Patriots passing attack that totaled 285 yards.

In the process, Diggs recorded his fifth 100-yard game of the year. With one regular-season contest remaining, another 1,000-yard season now appears well within reach.

Should he cross that threshold, the receiver would unlock an additional $500,000 incentive, provided he remains involved as New England closes out the regular season and gears up for the playoffs.

Drake Maye sets the tone

While the incentive storyline drew attention, the larger takeaway from the afternoon centered on Drake Maye. The Week 17 win capped a perfect road season for the Patriots, with the young quarterback orchestrating a wire-to-wire performance that never allowed the Jets to gain traction.

The opening drives told the story early. New England scored touchdowns on its first six possessions, immediately putting the game out of reach.

For Maye, it became a career outing. He threw a personal-best five touchdown passes before the contest was fully decided, continuing a season-long trend of calm, efficient, and confident quarterback play.

That efficiency has been a major reason why Diggs has thrived in this offense. After the game, the veteran receiver returned the praise, framing his big day as a reflection of his quarterback’s consistency rather than a pursuit of incentives.

A lot went right for the Patriots in Week 17, but almost all of it flowed from the quarterback. For Diggs, the $500,000 bonus was a welcome reward, but Maye‘s focus remains unchanged as the Patriots head into the playoffs in superb form.
