The Kansas City Chiefs are entering unfamiliar territory heading into the 2026 NFL Draft.
After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017, largely due to Patrick Mahomes suffering a season-ending ACL injury, the franchise finds itself reassessing its roster and long-term strategy.
Holding the No. 9 overall pick, the Chiefs have a valuable asset at their disposal. But rather than using it to select a top-tier prospect, there is growing speculation that they may trade down in the draft order to accumulate more assets and address multiple needs at once.
According to ESPN analyst Peter Schrager, that scenario is very much in play.
“At nine, Kansas City, which I can tell you could potentially be a trade-back team, to be honest,” Peter Schrager said on the Schrager Hour podcast. “I think Kansas City is looking to collect as many assets as possible, but they don’t usually draft in the top 10.”
That approach would align with how the Kansas City Chiefs have historically operated under general manager Brett Veach.
Rather than focusing on long-term development alone, the team appears intent on finding players who can contribute immediately, especially after a season where depth issues were exposed across the roster.
The decision to bring back veteran tight end Travis Kelce further underscores this “win-now” mentality.
While Kelce remains productive, the team is clearly preparing for a transition period, particularly as questions grow about how long the 36-year-old can continue at an elite level.
Balancing immediate needs with future planning
One of the most intriguing possibilities involves a potential trade scenario proposed by ESPN’s Bill Barnwell.
In this hypothetical deal, the Kansas City Chiefs could package their No. 9 pick along with former first-rounder Felix Anudike-Uzomah to acquire edge rusher Jonathan Greenard from the Minnesota Vikings.
The move would allow Kansas City to drop to the No. 18 pick while adding an established pass rusher capable of delivering immediate production.
Such a move would address one of the team’s most pressing needs. The Chiefs struggled to generate consistent pressure last season, and elite edge prospects like Rueben Bain Jr. and David Bailey could be off the board before their current pick.
On the offensive side, there are also clear gaps. With Patrick Mahomes expected to return, the team will need reliable pass-catching options to complement Rashee Rice.
However, top receivers such as Carnell Tate and Jordyn Tyson may not be available by the time Kansas City selects.
Another storyline gaining traction is the search for a long-term successor to Travis Kelce.
Former Chiefs quarterback Chase Daniel has already voiced his preference for Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq.
“I can’t stop imagining Kenyon Sadiq landing at 9 with the Chiefs & immediately lining up with Patrick Mahomes,” Chase Daniel wrote on X. “Stop it. My brain can’t handle this.”
While Kenyon Sadiq is projected as a mid-to-late first-round pick, trading down could actually improve the Chiefs’ chances of landing him while also acquiring additional assets.
Ultimately, the Kansas City Chiefs face a pivotal decision. Whether they stay at No. 9 or move down the board, the emphasis is clear: find players who can contribute right away and help the team return to contention.
After a rare setback, expect Kansas City to be aggressive, calculated, and unafraid to shake things up on draft night.
