While the NFL world is often filled with contract talks, game analysis, and off-season drama, Donna Kelce is using her platform for something deeper – raising awareness about shingles, a painful condition affecting millions over 50.
Earlier this year, as her son Travis Kelce prepared for a playoff battle against the Texans, Donna was hosting a different kind of huddle.
Joined by stars like Brooke Shields, Gina Torres, and Roselyn Sanchez, she gathered a group of VIPs in Kansas City for brunch – not just to watch a game, but to highlight an issue close to her heart.
The event was part of GSK’s THRIVE@50+ campaign, an initiative focused on encouraging people over 50 to be proactive about their health.
Donna, now a prominent ambassador for the campaign, has been vocal about the dangers of shingles, emphasizing that “Shingles is a painful, blistering rash that can develop at any time, without warning. 99% of adults over 50 years old already have the virus that causes shingles inside their body, even though not everyone at risk will develop shingles.”
She urged her followers to talk to doctors about prevention, adding, “Ask your doctor or pharmacist about your risk for shingles and about prevention.”
A Personal Reason Behind Donna’s Advocacy
For Donna, this isn’t just about public health-it’s personal. Sitting down with Brooke Shields, she opened up about watching friends struggle with shingles.
“I’ve had a few friends that have developed shingles. It’s a very painful disease. You miss out on the most precious moments in your life because you cannot be the person you want to be because you’re in pain. If you do get this particular disease, it’s not an easy one,” she said candidly.
To make the educational session interactive, Donna and Gina Torres even faced off in a playful football toss game – but this one had a serious message.
Donna first joined THRIVE@50+ last September alongside Shields and Torres, and she remains committed to educating others. “Everybody needs to take ownership of their health, regardless of age. That’s the most important thing you can do,” she said.
Meanwhile, Travis Kelce Decides His NFL Future
As Donna fights for health awareness, her son Travis Kelce is also making headlines – this time for his future with the Kansas City Chiefs.
After much speculation about a possible retirement following a tough Super Bowl loss to the Eagles, Kelce has committed to another season.
Despite a challenging 2024 season where he recorded career-low stats – just 823 receiving yards and three touchdowns – his passion for the game remains strong.
Yet, the Chiefs are not leaving things to chance. Reports suggest the team is eyeing LSU tight end Mason Taylor as a possible successor. Ayrton Ostly of USA TODAY described Taylor as “one of the best tight end prospects in years,” praising his size, athleticism, and reliable hands, adding, “Taylor could be an heir apparent for Chiefs icon Travis Kelce.”
At 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Taylor could be the future of the tight end role in Kansas City, giving the franchise options when Kelce eventually steps away.
Ostly noted that Taylor‘s limited targets at LSU were more about scheme than talent, making him an intriguing option for the Chiefs‘ long-term plans.
