Donald Trump puts pressure on Pochettino and the US national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup

One of the great illusions that they have in American soccer is to one day shine in world soccer, but due to their level and how they carry out their local league, that has been practically impossible. Although they can occasionally win a few matches against the Mexican National Team, the reality is that the United States has not historically been a rival nor has it had any important triumph in its record, but now, with Donald Trump in power, they are looking for that to change.

That is why on this occasion, Mauricio Pochettino, the current Argentine coach of the so-called Team USA has accepted that he has a responsibility given to him by Donald Trump, former president of the United States, to win the next FIFA World Cup in 2026, although that will be practically impossible.

Mauricio Pochettino acknowledges that Donald Trump wants Team USA to win the 2026 World Cup

This is how Mauricio Pochettino himself has accepted that Donald Trump has imposed something on him that motivates him, but that he knows will be complicated, such as transcending in the next World Cup to be held in Mexico, Canada and the United States.

“For us, the pressure is going to be there because we are hosts in the World Cup… In sport, in everything that Americans are involved in, they want to win. The players know that there is going to be enormous pressure and now our president Donald Trump likes to exert pressure, but he is welcome. That means we are going to feel the adrenaline we need to feel. We are ready to perform,” said Mauricio Pochettino at a press conference ahead of the 2024-2025 Concacaf Nations League Final Four, where he could meet Javier Aguirre’s Mexican national team in the final.

Pochettino thinks the United States could be the best in the world in the future

All this is striking, as Mauricio Pochettino has excelled in European soccer as a player and now coach and accepted the enormous responsibility of being with the United States national team, especially knowing that they have never won anything important, have not surpassed Mexico and it is difficult for them to compete against the great powers, but now he even considers that they could be the best in the world and goes further, as he even dares to give a prediction that has caused many negative reactions through social networks.

“I think we can dominate football, maybe in ten or 15 years, or maybe less: five, six, seven years. The potential is enormous in the United States. In five or ten years, we can surely be the number one in the world,” said Mauricio Pochettino about soccer and the United States national team.
