Donald Trump is accused of making important state decisions… on the golf course!

President Donald Trump‘s connection to golf has always been a visible part of his public image, but a recent report suggests that the sport may be exerting unusually direct influence on high level decision making.

Accounts circulating in Washington claim that a significant presidential pardon did not begin in the Oval Office or during a formal briefing, but on the grass of a golf course during a relaxed round of play.

Concerns Rise Over Informal Influence and Executive Decision Making

At seventy nine, Trump remains an active golfer and spends considerable time at his properties in Florida and New Jersey. Presidents have long used golf as a place to talk candidly and build relationships.

Dwight Eisenhower was famous for his time on the course, and Barack Obama regularly played during his presidency. Still, the idea that major decisions may be rooted in these informal moments has reignited debate about how a president should use the power of pardon.

The case in question centers on entertainment executive Tim Leiweke. Reports indicate that Trump issued a pardon shortly after golfing with former prosecutor and Republican congressman Trey Gowdy, who had advocated on Leiwekes behalf.

Just three weeks after the outing, Trump granted clemency to Leiweke, even though Justice Department officials had described the case against him as airtight.

He had been accused of participating in bid rigging connected to a major sports arena project for the University of Texas in 2018, along with alleged anticompetitive practices in the entertainment and events sector.

Reactions to the reported golf connection were swift and sharp. Critics voiced concern that significant legal judgments may have been shaped not through transparent review but through friendly conversation.

Many argued that even though the president holds clear constitutional authority over pardons, decisions with major legal and economic consequences should follow a thorough and open process.

Others raised wider institutional questions. Controversial pardons are nothing new, from Gerald Ford’s decision regarding Richard Nixon to Bill Clinton’s last minute clemencies. But historically these decisions followed petitions, legal evaluations, or political negotiations.

The suggestion that golf outings may now act as shortcuts to presidential influence has led to renewed calls for reforms, including greater disclosure and limits on pardons connected to personal ties.

Supporters of broad presidential discretion counter that the Constitution intentionally places few restrictions on clemency.

They say presidents should be free to act on legal reasoning, compassion, or personal judgment.

Still, the criticism highlights a growing concern about informal decision making in government, especially when personal relationships and pending legal matters intersect.

As Trump continues to lean on close allies and unconventional channels of advice, debate over the proper use of presidential power is likely to intensify.
