Does being a top pick in the NFL Draft ensure success? Tom Brady and other legends deny it

From Thursday, April 24-26, the 2025 NFL Draft will be taking place. And while all eyes are on who will be the No. 1 pick, there is no assurance that the No. 1 pick will come with success.

In fact, only 19 players who were picked first in the NFL Draft are Hall of Famers and only six quarterbacks have won a Super Bowl: Joe Namath, Terry Bradshaw, Jim Plunkett, Troy Aikman, John Elway, Peyton Manning and Eli Manning.

Who didn’t need to be picked No. 1 to succeed was Tom Brady himself. The legend was selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2000 Draft and, in his career, he won 7 Super Bowl rings. Today, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers is considered the GOAT of the NFL.

Another case was when the San Francisco 49ers took Joe Montana in the third round of the 1979 Draft. He won 4 rings and was 3 times Super Bowl MVP. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

In the same vein, the Atlanta Falcons selected Brett Favre in the second round in 1991 and he turned out to be the winner of Super Bowl XXXI and three-time MVP: in 1995, 1996 and 1997 with the Green Bay Packers.

Roger Staubach was chosen in the 10th round of the 1956 Draft by the Green Bay Packers, but this did not prevent him from being a 2-time Super Bowl winner with the Dallas Cowboys, SB VI MVP and Hall of Famer.

And of course, we cannot leave out of this list Bart Starr, who won Super Bowl I and II and was elected MVP of both editions with the Green Bay Packers, who selected him in 1956 in the 17th round. In addition, the legend was selected 4 times to the Pro Bowl and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Packers Hall of Fame in 1977.

Draft 2025

Now, with a new Draft just days away, expectations are high for every player. But with this background, of course we will be on the lookout for the last player to be selected.

Who knows, it could be the emergence of a new star.
