The Dodgers are not satisfied with the back-to-back championships and are already thinking about a decision that could reinforce both their defensive depth and clubhouse chemistry, securing the continuity of “Kike” Hernandez.
While the Puerto Rican advances in his recovery from elbow surgery, the organization is seriously considering keeping him for the 2026 season.
Where will Enrique Hernandez play next season?
After securing the continuity of Miguel Rojas with a one-year contract, the Los Angeles organization seems ready to take a similar step with another of the players most loved by the fans and the locker room. According to The Athletic, both the club and Hernandez are interested in a meeting that would maintain their long sporting relationship.
Hernandez has spent nine of his 12 MLB seasons wearing the Dodgers uniform, establishing himself as an indispensable piece for his leadership and ability to cover multiple positions. It is precisely because of this versatility that Dave Roberts sees him as a key player for the team ahead of the 2026 season.
Financially, it is a more than viable option as his most recent contract was for one year and $6.5 million, and a similar deal is not out of the question.
Kike Hernandez’s numbers
The Puerto Rican is coming off one of his most difficult campaigns at the plate, hitting just .203 in 93 games, the problem with his elbow in his non-dominant arm may have influenced his offensive production. The injury kept him out for much of July and August, reducing his rhythm and continuity.
Even so, Hernandez responded when he was most needed, as the veteran started every game for the Dodgers in the postseason, finishing with .250 and standing out for hitting the team’s only home run in Game 5 of the World Series against Trey Yesavage.
In addition, he was the left fielder in the unforgettable catch by Andy Pages in Game 7, a play that ended up defining the championship.
Why do the Dodgers want to renew Kike Hernandez?
The answer is simple: depth and versatility in the squad
The Dodgers enter 2026 as reigning champions and with a highly competitive roster. However, there are areas where Hernandez’s experience is vital:
- Center field: Tommy Edman is projected as the starter, but he is coming off a year marked by injuries and ups and downs.
- Second base: Hyeseong Kim and Alex Freeland are talented, although they have very little MLB experience.
- Platoons and breaks: Hernandez could cover strategic shifts for Max Muncy or Kim in left/right situations.
The combination of leadership, versatility and the fact that he is an old acquaintance of the institution make him an ideal profile to maintain the balance of the Dodgers in 2026.
