Dodgers set their sights on Japan: Munetaka Murakami could be the next big signing

The Los Angeles Dodgers, one of the most active and ambitious franchises in the international market, have once again turned their attention to Japanese baseball. According to multiple reports, the Los Angeles club is seriously interested in signing Munetaka Murakami, one of the biggest stars in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) and currently a member of the Yakult Swallows.

Murakami, 25, is a left-handed hitter with tremendous power, capable of playing both third base and first base, making him a coveted piece for any lineup. In Japan, he has starred in seasons with more than 50 home runs, in addition to exhibiting exceptional plate discipline, characteristics that have aroused the interest of several Major League teams, including the Yankees and Mets.

A space problem in Los Angeles

The Dodgers’ situation, however, is unique. With Freddie Freeman firmly established at first base and Shohei Ohtani occupying the designated hitter role, Murakami’s arrival would create a natural space problem in the starting lineup.

The player who could be most affected is Max Muncy, an important piece of the club in recent years but one who has shown recent offensive and defensive ups and downs.

Muncy has maintained his power at the plate, but his average and on-base percentage have declined significantly. In addition, his contract – which enters its final year – and the depth of the Angels’ roster make him an attractive trade chip for teams looking to bolster their roster with a versatile veteran with postseason experience.

Looking to the future

Murakami’s possible arrival would fit into the Dodgers’ long-term strategy of maintaining an elite offense while rejuvenating their roster. In Los Angeles, they believe that the Japanese player’s addition, along with Ohtani and Freeman, could form one of the most feared offensive tridents in modern baseball.

If the deal goes through, it would open the door for the Dodgers to move or trade Muncy, either to get pitching reinforcements or to free up payroll space.

A bet that follows the Los Angeles pattern

The Dodgers’ interest in Murakami is not surprising. In recent years, the Dodgers have been known to bet heavily on international talent, especially Japanese talent. The record signing of Shohei Ohtani in 2024 was a clear example of their willingness to invest in global superstars.

Now, with Murakami in their sights, the question is not whether the Dodgers can sign him, but who they will be willing to sacrifice to make it happen.

If this franchise has shown anything, it is that it is not afraid to move the pieces necessary to continue dominating MLB.
