Dodgers designate Andy Ibanez despite million-dollar contract and gamble on Michael Siani

When it comes to the Los Angeles Dodgers, money is rarely an obstacle. The reigning World Series champions made a bold decision on Tuesday by designating infielder Andy Ibanez for assignment, just weeks after signing him to a one-year, $1.2 million contract.

The move was more of a strategic need than a financial one: to free up a spot on the 40-man roster to claim outfielder Michael Siani, who had been placed on waivers and recently had a brief stint with the New York Yankees.

Andy Ibanez loses ground despite defensive versatility

Ibañez, 32, joined the Dodgers in early January as a depth piece for the infield, after the Detroit Tigers decided not to offer him a contract in November. His main value lay in his defensive versatility, as last season he played five positions: all four infield positions and left field.

In 2024, the Cuban-Mexican played 91 games, with an offensive line of .239 average, .653 OPS, four home runs and 21 runs batted in. Discreet numbers, but useful for a secondary role. Even so, the Dodgers opted to sacrifice that versatility in favor of greater outfield depth.

There is a possibility that Ibanez will remain with the organization if he is not claimed by another team, although his departure marks an unexpected turn considering the club’s recent investment.

Michael Siani gains ground in roster competition

The direct beneficiary was Michael Siani, a 26-year-old outfielder, who will take the coveted spot on the 40-man roster. Siani has had an inconsistent Major League career, with stints with the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals, accumulating 160 games in four seasons.

In 2024, his longest campaign, he played 124 games with St. Louis, where he batted .228, with an OPS of .570, two home runs, 20 RBIs and 20 stolen bases, contributing mainly speed and defense. Last season he appeared in only 19 games, reflecting his unstable role at the top level.

The Yankees claimed him on January 23, but lost him less than two weeks later in a chain of moves that shows how competitive the bottom of the roster is in MLB.

The Dodgers continue to fine-tune their depth ahead of the season

With this decision, the Dodgers confirm that their current priority is to strengthen the outfield, even at the expense of parting with a newly signed player. The depth, roster flexibility and preparation for a long season seem to outweigh minor contracts at a franchise with clear aspirations for a third consecutive championship.

Key facts about the Dodgers move

  • Designated hitter: Andy Ibañez
  • Contract: 1 year / $1.2 million
  • Player claimed: Michael Siani
  • Reason: To free up space on the 40-man roster
