The Los Angeles Dodgers have done it again, they have taken the National League’s Western Division after a comeback win over the San Diego Padres, as they also took the three-game series with a 7-2 final score on a special night at Dodger Stadium.
The Dodgers avoided more pressure heading into the final weekend of the regular season, because a loss to the friars would have put the Padres only two games back with three to go, and now they can concentrate in securing home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The Philadelphia Phillies are one game back of Los Angeles in the fight to have the best record in the National League. The Padres had already secured a playoff spot after beating the Dodgers in the first game of the series after a game-ending triple play.
Still a lot to play for in the National League
As previously mentioned, the Phillies and the Dodgers are battling for the top spot in the National League, however the other divisional champions is the Milwaukee Brewers but they are already locked as the three seed and will play in the wild card round.
The Padre have control to secure the top wild card spot but need to win their final series, one that will no be easy. They have a three-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks, their next rival, but they also need to pay attention to what the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets are doing.
The two NL East teams have two more games pending between each other after a rainout on Wednesday and Thursday. San Diego has a four-game lead over the Braves and hold the tiebreaker against them, and are three games over the Mets, but if the Padres can’t win the series against the Diamondbacks, their top wild card spot is in danger as the New York and Atlanta have five games left to play. The Mets will play in Milwaukee and the Braves will host the Royals this weekend.
