Dodgers break MLB record with Edwin Díaz deal – a new dynasty move?

The Los Angeles Dodgers didn’t just upgrade their bullpen – they rewrote the market. By signing three-time Reliever of the YearEdwin Díaz to a three-year, $69 million contract, the franchise set a new MLB standard, giving Díaz the highest annual value ever for a reliever.

The bold strike at the Winter Meetings instantly told the rest of baseball: the Dodgers aren’t waiting around. Díaz arrives in L.A. as the crown jewel of this year’s pitching class, bringing back the energy and intimidation that once turned ninth innings into must-watch drama.

His electric fastball and elite command returned in full force last season, backing up the Dodgers’ aggressive push. After late-game meltdowns cost them critical wins in 2025, the front office knew they needed a true closer – and they paid a record price to get one.

The Mets watched from the sidelines

The New York Mets, hesitant to match that level of commitment, watched the Dodgers swoop in and erase any doubt about Díaz’s value. Los Angeles didn’t negotiate on margins – they invested in dominance.

With a 1.30 ERA and a 6-3 record in 2025, Díaz showed he’s still one of baseball’s top pressure performers. Now, he becomes the anchor of a bullpen built to protect championship windows that don’t stay open forever, even for powerhouses.

And the Dodgers aren’t done shaking up their roster.

The league is watching the Dodgers’ next move with caution

Reports indicate they are exploring the trade market for power-hitting outfielder Teoscar Hernández, whose bat remains strong but whose defensive numbers have sharply declined – ranking 33rd among 36 right fielders by one metric. The move signals L.A.’s desire to keep sharpening every edge.

If the Dodgers are willing to reset the market for a reliever, the question for the rest of MLB becomes clear: What game-changing move are they planning next?
