Do the Warriors have the best defender in NBA history? One of their players says so

Golden State Warriors guard Buddy Hield is entering his second season with the team, and ahead of the 2025-26 NBA campaign, he made a bold statement about one of his teammates.

In an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Dubs Talk, Hield called veteran forward Draymond Green the greatest defender the league has ever seen.

At 32, Hield is still chasing his first NBA title. He’s hoping his journey with Golden State brings him closer to that goal – and he’s putting a lot of faith in the leadership and defensive prowess of Green.

During the interview, Hield didn’t mince words: “He’s probably the greatest defender this game’s ever seen. Because the way he navigates things and quarterbacks things from the back – it’s just impressive.”

Hield emphasized how much of a difference-maker Green is on the defensive end. He sees Green not just as a player, but as a coach on the floor – someone who orchestrates the entire defense with high-level communication, awareness, and intensity.

Despite having only one Defensive Player of the Year award (2017), Draymond Green is widely recognized as one of the most versatile and impactful defenders in modern basketball.

His resume includes four NBA titles, nine All-Defensive team selections, and countless postseason moments where his defense shifted the outcome of games.

The Hall of Fame case built on defense

While stats and awards matter, what separates Green in Hield’s eyes is how he elevates his teammates. “Everything that he says, I don’t take it the wrong way, because I know he’s just trying to make me better,” said Hield.

“He’s one of the best competitors this game’s ever had. I love going to battle with him because I know he has my back every time.”

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has echoed similar admiration over the years, frequently calling Green the smartest defender he’s ever coached. Even in his mid-30s, Green continues to anchor Golden State’s defense at an elite level.

In the 2024-25 season, Green finished as a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year once again – proving his consistency and longevity.

Now 35, Green remains the emotional and tactical leader of a Warriors squad hoping for one more title run. His intensity, defensive IQ, and willingness to hold teammates accountable have helped define a dynasty, and earned him widespread respect across the league.

The Warriors are set to open their season on October 21 against the Los Angeles Lakers. As always, all eyes will be on Draymond Green, the man many, including Buddy Hield, believe may go down as the greatest defender the NBA has ever known.
