Serbian Novak Djokovic, eliminated by Argentine Thiago Agustín Tirante in his Cincinnati opener after suffering a physical problem due to the high temperatures, said this Saturday that he has “a medical condition” that gets worse with heat and humidity and left open whether he will return to this tournament next year.
“Congratulations to my opponent. It certainly wasn’t a pleasant match for me, because of how I felt. It’s not the first time and I suppose it won’t be the last either, but that’s the way it is,” Djokovic said at the press conference after his elimination in Cincinnati.
The Serb needed medical attention after suffering a physical ailment during his match, lost 2-6, 6-4, and 6-4 to Tirante.
“It’s a health condition that I have and that has been bothering me over the last few years. It causes me a lot of problems, especially when it’s humid and hot,” Djokovic admitted.
“I knew there would be humidity, but there are all these things, like nerves and everything else, that make it worse, and that’s what happened,” he added.
At 39 years old, Djokovic is not sure whether he will return to compete in Cincinnati, a tournament he has won three times.
“Of course I hope to return, but unfortunately it seems more likely that I won’t. We’ll see what the future holds for us,” he said.
