Diogo Jota’s widow shares the heartbreaking final text she sent before his fatal crash

There are moments in sport that transcend results and statistics, and the story of Diogo Jota is one that continues to resonate far beyond the soccer pitch.

Nearly a year after the Liverpool forward’s tragic death, new details have emerged that bring a deeply personal dimension to the loss, a final message from his wife that never reached him.

Diogo Jota, 28, had just married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, in Porto.

Eleven days later, he was travelling back toward England when the car he was driving crashed on a motorway in northern Spain, killing both him and his younger brother, Andre Silva.

The soccer world mourned a player in his prime, but for his family, the grief has been defined by the smallest, most human moments.

According to excerpts from an upcoming biography written by Jose Manuel Delgado, Rute Cardoso sent Diogo Jota a message shortly before the crash, unaware of what was about to happen.

“Love, when you stop, call me, because I have something here to show you,” she wrote, referring to a video from their wedding she had just received.

Diogo Jota‘s final trip was not routine. He had been advised not to fly following recent lung surgery, prompting him to make the journey by road.

Driving a Lamborghini Huracan through northern Spain, he was nearing the border with Portugal when disaster struck.

Authorities later indicated that a tyre blowout during an overtaking manoeuvre may have triggered the crash, with excessive speed also considered a possible factor.

The vehicle left the road and caught fire, leaving no chance of survival. For Liverpool, the loss was immediate and profound.

Teammates, coaches and fans paid tribute to a player whose intelligence, work rate and finishing had made him a key figure.

But the unfolding details in the biography highlight a different side of Diogo Jota, one rooted in family, humility and routine.

Rute Cardoso reportedly grew concerned when her husband failed to respond.

As hours passed, she began contacting the hotel where he was expected to stay, followed by hospitals and police, as the reality slowly set in.

A family’s grief in their own words

The book also captures emotional accounts from Diogo Jota‘s parents, offering a glimpse into the moment their lives changed.

His father, Joaquim, described receiving a distressed call from Rute Cardoso late at night.

“I immediately had a bad feeling,” Joaquim said, recalling the journey to her home as “horrible” even before the full truth was known. His mother, Isabel, shared a similarly haunting memory.

After sending a message to Andre Silva during the trip, she never received a reply.

“There was something there waiting for the reply that never came,” Isabel said, describing the uneasy feeling before the tragedy was confirmed.

Beyond the shock, the biography paints a portrait of Diogo Jota as someone who remained grounded despite his success.

Rute Cardoso notes that he had little interest in the extravagance often associated with elite soccer players, preferring a quieter lifestyle centered on family.

More than a soccer legacy

The book, titled Nunca Mais e Muito Tempo, brings together testimonies from across football, including teammates and coaches who reflect on Diogo Jota‘s impact.

Yet its most powerful moments come from those closest to him, where the focus shifts from goals and trophies to relationships and memories.

In the end, it is not a match-winning strike or a career milestone that defines the story, but a simple message about a wedding video, a reminder of how quickly life can change.

For fans, Diogo Jota will always be remembered for his contributions on the field.

For his family, the legacy is far more personal, shaped by moments that never had the chance to be completed.
