The Cleveland Browns‘ plans have not unfolded as expected. The drama in the quarterback room is far from over, with two players already departing, leaving head coach Kevin Stefanski with just two rookie options: Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
This is the reality facing a team that delivers a different version of itself week after week, much to the frustration of fans who can no longer cope. After securing their only win of the season, the Cleveland Browns have reverted to the same inconsistent team of old.
Dillon Gabriel May Not Be the Answer
The game against the Pittsburgh Steelers exposed the Browns’ offense as far from productive. The longest play was a 24-yard gain by Harold Fannin Jr., and Dillon Gabriel‘s passing attempts left much to be desired. As noted in analyses like those from Sports Illustrated, “the Browns’ offense lacks spark.” Opposing teams aren’t concerned about Cleveland’s ability to execute deep attacks, and the running game can often be contained.
Gabriel attempted 52 passes for a mere 221 yards-a low output for such a high volume-with all his passes traveling 20 yards or less. This is not a formula for winning in the NFL. The issue could stem from the wide receivers, the offensive line, or the play-calling from the sideline. Regardless, Gabriel often bears the brunt of the blame, opening the door to the possibility of Cleveland turning to its third quarterback of the season.
Shedeur Sanders automatically became QB1 after Joe Flacco‘s trade to the Cincinnati Bengals, just days after Gabriel assumed the starting role. Logic suggests Sanders will get his chance soon, but for now, there’s no indication he’ll even see his first snaps.
At one point, Dillon Gabriel was thrust into the NFL spotlight while Flacco was still on the roster, an opportunity Sanders has yet to receive, even as the Browns no longer have games in hand to dictate their fate.
We’ll have to wait and see what decision Kevin Stefanski makes, as the Cleveland Browns’ season could end much sooner than anticipated.
