Dillon Gabriel gets the cold shoulder while Shedeur Sanders receives starter treatment

The Cleveland Browns have officially made a significant change at quarterback ahead of Week 5, with rookie Dillon Gabriel named the new starter in place of veteran Joe Flacco.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed the decision, emphasizing that the former Oklahoma standout is prepared to lead the offense.

The move came after Flacco‘s struggles through the opening four games, in which he committed eight turnovers and failed to generate consistent results.

Yet, while the Browns made their quarterback hierarchy clear, confusion arose overseas.

In London, where Cleveland were scheduled to face the Minnesota Vikings at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, pregame displays and graphics appeared to feature Shedeur Sanders as the starting quarterback.

The mix-up prompted NFL analyst Tony Grossi to remark that the stadium “didn’t get the memo” about the team’s lineup change.

Sanders, another rookie quarterback and the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, drew additional attention during pregame warmups when he joined the Browns‘ main offensive unit for a short drill session.

Observers noted his sharp accuracy and composure, briefly fueling speculation that a last-minute switch might be in play.

However, team sources and subsequent reports confirmed that Sanders remains Cleveland’s third-string quarterback and is not part of the Week 5 game plan.

Browns’ Long-Term Approach with Sanders

NFL insider Ian Rapoport provided context for the team’s handling of Sanders, reporting that the Browns intend to introduce him only when a tailored system and practice plan are in place.

The organization is focused on gradual development rather than rushing the young quarterback into competition.

Rapoport added that when Sanders eventually plays, it will follow a full week of preparation and a scheme specifically designed to highlight his strengths.

This strategy reflects a broader pattern in Stefanski‘s approach to quarterback management.

Gabriel’s promotion was driven by readiness and familiarity with the Browns’ offensive framework, whereas Sanders is being refined for future opportunities.

With Flacco moving into a backup role, Gabriel will have the chance to prove that his collegiate efficiency can translate to the professional level.

Off the field, Sanders briefly drew criticism after the quarterback change was announced. During a media session, he responded to questions without speaking, instead mouthing his answers.

Former NFL quarterback and analyst Dan Orlovsky described the gesture as “immature,” suggesting that it did not reflect the professionalism expected at this level. Many fans echoed that sentiment on social media.

A day later, Sanders attempted to clarify his stance by posting a photo of himself and Gabriel practicing together, accompanied by the caption “#dawgs,” in apparent support of his teammate.

The post appeared to signal his acceptance of the team’s decision and his commitment to staying prepared.

For now, the Browns‘ focus is firmly on Gabriel‘s debut as starter. His performance against Minnesota will serve as an early test of whether Cleveland‘s offensive adjustments can stabilize their season.

Sanders’ development continues behind the scenes, as he awaits a moment that arrives on the team’s terms, not by accident or confusion.
