The Minnesota Lynx, currently leading the WNBA standings, bolstered their roster by acquiring DiJonai Carrington from the Dallas Wings ahead of the trade deadline and the star player has opened up on switch.
The Lynx are making moves in pursuit of a championship run and with the 2025 WNBA Playoffs approaching, they landed the 27-year-old shooting guard who was named to the All-Defensive First Team in 2024.
Following her first practice with her new side, DiJonai reflected on the move and her expectations going forward as she targets the first championship title of her solid career in the sport.
“I’m super excited to be here,” Carrington stated after Monday’s session. “I’m blessed that they saw that I could be an asset and there was a mutual respect there.
“I’m excited because I feel like my mindset got to shift and that’s what I want is to be pushed to be great.
“Pushed to not settle for anything less than that greatness. Obviously we played each other last year in the [semi-finals] so I think Coach Reeve knows what I’m capable of.
“I think she’s going to make sure that I’m given that output every single night.”
Her arrival signals Minnesota‘s intent to reinforce an already dominant squad, although the 2024 Most Improved Player has seen a statistical dip in 2025, averaging 10.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
However, a change of scenery, and being surrounded by a playoff-caliber roster, could reignite her production and for Carrington, the chance to contribute to a title-contending team isn’t just about wins.
Carrington‘s integration into the lineup comes at a pivotal moment as Minnesota will be without their star forward, Napheesa Collier, for at least two weeks due to a sprained right ankle sustained during the dominant August 3 victory over the Las Vegas Aces.
The injury occurred late in the third quarter as Collier attempted an offensive rebound and landed awkwardly. Now with their star sidelined, the Lynx will rely on Carrington to help maintain their momentum and maintain
Minnesota holds a commanding six-and-a-half game lead over the Phoenix Mercury in the Western Conference and a five-and-a-half game lead over the New York Liberty in the overall WNBA standings.
But the path to securing home-court advantage throughout the playoffs requires consistency, especially with top talent unavailable and Carrington is clear about her aspirations during this critical stretch.
“I’m excited to just be held accountable and to be around winners,” DiJonai added, ahead of a clash with the Seattle Storm on Tuesday night. The match will test ability to adapt quickly could be a deciding factor in maintaining Minnesota’s top-seed status during Collier’s absence.
