Did the Browns interfere in Aaron Rodgers’ future? Cleveland’s bold move to determine where he ends up

The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves at a critical crossroads, grappling with an uncertain quarterback situation that could define their upcoming season. Despite their persistence, the Steelers remain locked in a standoff with Aaron Rodgers, while potential trade talks for Kirk Cousins may offer a glimmer of hope. Add to this a lackluster draft class at the position, and Pittsburgh’s path forward looks as challenging as ever.

At 40 years old, Rodgers still holds allure as a four-time MVP, but his hesitation to commit to Pittsburgh has left the franchise in limbo. Rodgers, who has reportedly considered retirement, is the Steelers’ top target. However, his indecision has forced Pittsburgh to explore other options, with Cousins emerging as a viable alternative.

The Cleveland Browns have inadvertently shifted the quarterback market, signing veteran Joe Flacco to a one-year deal worth $4 million, with incentives that could increase the total to $13 million. This move effectively removes Cleveland from pursuing Cousins, leaving the Atlanta Falcons with limited options for the veteran quarterback, who has been relegated to a backup role behind Michael Penix Jr. The Steelers may now have the leverage they need to initiate trade talks with Atlanta.

A complicated immediate panorama

Cousins, despite a turbulent 2024 season where he led the league in interceptions (16) and fumbles (13), still offers a proven track record. Healthier and another year removed from an Achilles injury, he presents a safer choice compared to Pittsburgh’s current fallback, Mason Rudolph. While Rudolph has shown flashes of competence during his tenure, the Steelers’ ambitions demand a more established presence under center.

Meanwhile, the uncertainty surrounding Rodgers complicates Pittsburgh’s offseason plans. Building an offense around a future Hall of Famer like Rodgers would require a vastly different approach than constructing a scheme for Cousins-or a rookie like Shedeur Sanders or Jaxson Dart, should the Steelers pivot to the draft. Pittsburgh’s front office faces a ticking clock as clarity on Rodgers’ decision remains elusive.

The urgency to address the quarterback dilemma is heightened by the ripple effects it may have on the Steelers’ broader offseason strategy. Securing Cousins would stabilize the team, enabling them to focus on other needs during the draft. Rodgers, while still a compelling option, leaves Pittsburgh in a holding pattern that could jeopardize their ability to assemble a cohesive roster.

For the Steelers, the window for action is narrowing. Whether they gamble on Rodgers, trade for Cousins, or roll the dice on a rookie quarterback, the outcome of this decision will likely define not only their 2025 season but also their trajectory in the highly competitive AFC North. One thing is clear: the clock is ticking, and Pittsburgh must act decisively to chart their path forward.
